That was weird to me, seems like you would rather punch it in for a TD if your trying to save face and the way they were moving the ball most likely woulda happened.

Probably just wanted as many points as they realistically could score

They didn't want to rub it in to our 4th string.

I wondered the same thing because - why not? - but then thought maybe the coach was just wanting to ensure as many points as possible against LSU since that game likely never happens again.

Why is everyone still responding?

I answered the question. They kicked the field goal to cover the point spread (51)

Last I checked it was +44.5 and they lost by 48. Field goal did them no good.

Probably so, but I woulda tried to score a TD if I'm saving face for a stat sheet.

51 was the spread at kickoff

Game scenarios. They operated that last drive as if it were for a game winner.

Very odd coincidence.

Do you think their coach was checking the spread right up until kick off?

To take something positive into the locker room. Also to give kicker some confidence after he missed earlier

Like the OP, southern wanted to maximize their point total but let’s face it, lsu will not play southern again anytime soon.
Theoretically, we all realize, that had Brian Kelly kept his starters in the whole game, (which would make no sense), lsu could have beat southern 75-9.

I guess it’s hard to imagine that someone went up to him late in the game and said “we can cover the spread if we kick a FG”

The line was -47.5.

LSU still covered it.

He probably wanted to work on live action field goals and give the kicker reps because their kicker looked terrible on a couple of attempts earlier in the game.

A good opportunity for your unit to practice a last second field goal. They also missed two, so wanted to get his unit some more work.
