They screwed Shula

Not really. He just came in at a bad time for a coach when sanctions were beginning to hit. The reason Fran bolted like he did. Things were bleak on the coaching front in hiring someone. He was a Bama man, had some coaching experience and we needed some stability to get through the sanctions.

several had refused bamas head job before they bribed $abun to take it. Mal Moore was all but fired before $abun and $ext on shoved it down their throats.

No doubt several turned Bama down. Coming off it's 2nd worst decade in history kinda makes a program lose it's luster. I know we went after Saban first, then Riley, then Rod and then reoffered Saban. Moore had made some bad decisions and was on the hot seat, for Fran, Shula, Price, Gottfried. But he hit homeruns with Saban and Grant.

It used to be said that bama had one of the best jobs in the country. The subsequent hiring of Sabin proved that it wasn't

Gotta agree here too. Bama's down period, coupled with the success of a few other programs, caused it to lose it's luster. However, the sustained success over it's history, helped to bring it back, along with the terrific job Saban has done. I'd venture to say it's a top 5, maybe top 3 destination again, with it's facilities and ability to rebound the way they do.

no he is not. Not taking anything away from Miles, but Saban is the best coach in college football. Miles is on the next tier.

They're on the same tier.. jesus some of you are more stuck on saban than all of your ex girlfriends combined.

He brought both programs back up to a top tier nationally.
bama was never down, they were just on probation.

Don't forget that Shula went 10-2 in 2005

on probation, program was stale, politics were bad. They needed a change in Tuscaloosa in the worse way and Saban was able make systemic changes

if you argue that LSU should be #1 based on results on the field (playing Oregon, etc..) then you must argue that Saban gets the nod vs Miles based on accomplishments (2 NC at 2 schools). Mile is a GREAT coach but Saban has the resume.

So the only way for Miles to stack up to Saban is for him to leave LSU and win a NC at another school?

I don't get this 2 NC at 2 schools thing. It's just a way for you guys to keep hating on Miles even IF he wins another championship.

Miles has been loyal to LSU and kept LSU as a top tier program. He will go down in history as the greatest ever at LSU.
You make no sense!

How can Saban be better than Miles AND Miles be the greatest ever at LSU?

Either Saban is the greatest or Miles is the greatest, make up your mind.

No actually I make perfect sense. Miles has proven to be a good fit here but that doesn't mean he could win at any program. when Saban came into BR in 99, the program was in disarray kinda of how it was when he arrived at Mich State. Saban could win at any program. I honestly cannot say that about miles.

the one with the better players is generally the best coach.

Unless of course you are coaching against ULM, Utah State, etc. Then it comes to coaching.

Those coaches that lose to clearly inferior teams have holes in their prep.

Given equal talent, there are probably at least a dozen or more coaches that will prepare their teams to play well against the other.

With not having bounced around to multiple programs, because he has character, how can you make that assumption and use your assumption to form an opinion about who is the better coach? So, don't act like your OPINION is the final rule.... its just your opinion... like rest of us on here

So Miles gets no credit for Okie State?

Did he win the Big 12? Yes I give him credit there, but what Saban has accomplished at two schools no one in college football was able to do it before him.

What Miles did at Ok. St. was equivalent to what Saban did at Mich St.

At marquee programs like LSU and Alabama any good coach who can recruit can raise the program. We know from experience at LSU it DOES take a competent coach - Curley Hallman can't do it - but in many ways it's harder to sustain success at the highest level. It is extremely difficult to compete for championships every year - go ask Mack Brown

Not saying he will, but if Les and LSU beat Bama this year and win another championship will you change your opinion? Remember, if Bama can't capture it all this year that will be 1 SEC championship in 5 years for your boy Saban. Just asking.

By the way, Shula was fired because he couldn't bet Auburn. Which gives me another thought - Miles and Chizik each have one NC, which is the better coach in your mind?

The both have their pros/cons

It's like asking: what's better? fricking an STD-free experienced stripper vs virgin.

Both have their pros/cons and different people would answer differently
