Don't feel bad. I'm convinced 90% of umpires don't understand it either.

Mainieri had a college umpire speak at a Coaches Committee meeting a couple of years ago and when the ump asked if we had any questions, I asked him to explain the balk rule.

He stuttered and stammered....referred to a pitcher moving towards the plate, not completely stopping, not stepping towards first base when he throws that way and bending his front knee before throwing to first base. When he finished he said, "there's a lot of subjectivity to that rule." He got a lot of laughs when he said that.

I don't think he meant it to be funny.
