You're making a point that is WAY more polarized than it should be. Miles was handed a golden platter, true. He did not, however, nearly destroy it. He won a national championship in 2007. He had a down year in 2008 due to the departure of the entire defense, two quarterbacks and a DC. He had a solid (if unspectacular) year in 2009 in the rebuilding phase. Now he's set to have a very good (2005-2007 good) year in 2010.
I'll agree that he's not a great coach from a strategic standpoint. It's pretty obvious that he makes calls that no other coach in America would make. Tom Osbourne went for 2 in the national championship game instead of kicking the XP and playing for overtime. Miles makes calls like that on a weekly basis.
But he has coached his team to a 10-1 regular season record admist a hurricane. He won a national championship, he's reached a 10-win season with two games left to play while coaching around his quarterbacks for the first 8 games of the season. He pulls in recruits like nobody's business.
No, Les Miles is not the stone-faced disciplinarian or the tactical general that people feel he should be. If that is your expectation, then I can see why you believe that he should be gone sooner rather than later.
But he runs a clean program, his players love to play for him. He has a very impressive win/loss record both overall and in conference. If you're a process-oriented fan, Miles annoys the shite out of you because he seldom follows conventional wisdom. But he is unconventional and it works for him.
I've argued this point with you for so long that you can recognize that my position is nothing new. Miles remained in my good graces by a single thread after the Tennessee game. But now I have found that my faith was rewarded.
Miles is not the virus to LSU football. He is a very good coach who knows the strengths and weaknesses of the entire team, himself included. He does what he does because he has the faith in his team that they will do this. That speaks volumes to me.
I will not say that Miles' future is secured. He could very well falter down the line and lose his job. But at a time when 2008 and 2009 can now be recognized as the natural ebb and flow of conference powers, I think he has secured his place for the next few years.
So suffer if you must while Miles continues to post wins in closer than they should be games, while at the same time making insane calls that produce amazing results to win the big ones. Your position will never change... I will alter mine on a case-by-case basis.
Yea buddy

Like him or hate him, one thing is undeniable:
Les miles doesn't deserve 4 mil per year.

6 wins within a touchdown. Last minute wins in 3 games against Tn, OM and FL. Must be great coaching???

Damn, great pick up on this TB. There wasn't overtime back then. Osbourne went for the win instead of a tie. Props TB.

Yes. Great coaches win the close ones.

Somehow he just Wins. Why change? Look at what happened at Miami, FSU, Notre Dame, etc. It would be insane to run him off right now.

Say what you want about the man.....love him, hate him, curse and ridicule him....
Through it all, there's one thing you can't deny....HE WINS.
That is all that I require of a coach at my beloved LSU....that, and a clean program of course.

here's the sad reality. if LSU went 4-8 next season (which I hope DOESN'T happen), NO ONE will be shocked or surprised.....and it's because of Les Miles. Maybe Miles is really great....and makes a lot of money betting his team against the spread every week.

NO sports coach should get miilions but Wall St con artists get more and Fed workers that are inept get over 100 K+ year. It is all out of control ...

Bingo!! He runs a clean program and he wins. That's what he is paid to do. The LSU football program also makes tons of money.
If he were an employee of mine that is all I'd want. I wouldn't care about incidentals. I wouldn't criticize the color of his tie or how he speaks in public, or if he doesn't do things exactly the way I would do them. What I want are results.
Les delivers. Better than most in his profession and a whale of a lot better than any of his critics could ever dream to do.

One thing I love about Les is that he has his team ready to compete each week which is not easily done. He seems to always have us in a position to win at the end and we usually do.
I think he handled the quarterback situation this year masterfully and now JJ is emerging as decent player as his confidence is growing. Les is a players coach, a great person, and a great recruiter. He also has a sense of humor and a sense of perspective which the negatigers are sorely lacking. I have also been consistantly a Miles supporter and I am proud to have him as our coach.

The real tragedy is that you are still at mimimun wage?
A person is "worth" what he can get paid. No more no less. Les runs an enterprize that returns about $50 million to the LSU athletic department. From a purely business standpoint, I'd consider that he is worth the investment.
