Could see Shanahan being valued as the swing guy who can fill in all over.

I agree Hines is probably best suited as a guard.

I'd like to see Evans in the role.

I wouldnt be surprised if it were Shanahan. He's the right build, he's smart, he's got some experience albeit against weaker opposition. We have an open spot at G and Hines is a former starter with the body of a bull. I believe this is a lineup the staff will certainly try.

I'm hopeful that between 4 guys (Hines, Evans, Turner, and Shanahan) they can find someone who can make the calls and snap the ball consistently.

Consistent snaps are very important.

Looks like Hines job to lose. He's been groomed there since last season. He will be the biggest strongest center in the SEC. Hard to imagine that Evans or Shanihan beat him out at this point.

Read awhile back that G Bradford was looking like a beast (road grader). Might be ahead of Thomas at this time.

Joe Evans has a shot but he’s inexperienced. I think it comes down to Hines or Liam Shanahan. Hines came back to campus overweight at 350 lbs. Shanahan came in at 304 lbs. These weights are according to LSU’s website. But with us now in the shotgun most of the time I think it will be who can snap the ball the best and knows the calls and protections backwards and forwards. Who y’all think it’ll be?
Good points! Check out this article on the OL

June Update LSU player Weights/Height

CHASEN HINES JR
Our returning center experience at 6’3 349, (up 13 lbs from 336) reported heavy, but not too bad, and leads in the Center battle. Hines is a road grader, and along with Ingram at LG, Bradford/Thomas at RG, Deculus and Rosenthal at RT & LT, LSU’s HUGE LINEUP is a GUT-stomping TALENTED OL that will take over games with the run late in a game after defenses are gassed. The trick is getting Hines to play finesse pass blocking schemes and read defenses better. Practice against one helluva defense in August will help him.

Prediction: Hines starts

Joe Evans Soph or Charles Turner
Joe Evans 6’1” 319 up 31 lbs from 288), reported heavy but not too bad as he was tasked to add some weight. Joe is a D-Line transfer to OL that was just learning to pass block effectively in the Spring. His height at 6’1” is squat for a Center but he’s strong and His primary goal is to push Hines in practice and add depth to the Center position while Turner (a 2-year project) develops. Evans could surprise if Hines doesn’t work to the level of coaching expectations.

Charles Turner RS Freshman
Charles Turner 6’5” 287 up 21 lbs is the best Pure Center. Coach Cregg Expects Him to take over when he meets S&C goals set. he’s athletic but needs more muscle to take SEC beatings week in and week out. Will push for PT next year if Hines (a G/C NFL prototype versatile monster) does not go pro in 2021.

Liam Shanahan brings depth to the entire OL and could surprise at Center or Guard as a backup. Waiting to see reports on his ability to survive our summer humidity. This ain’t a Harvard with Cambridge Mass low temps and humidity.

Bigger, quicker, and wider is the body style needed.

I actually agree with Les again(this is happening much too often lately )—350 is pretty fricking fat for a center. And as know it’s hot in Louisiana in the summer, and everybody assumes it’ll be easy for a 350 pound man to just shed 30-40 pounds in a couple of months. But even with the cutting edge training and nutrition he’ll have access to, that’s a lot of weight to lose and keep your strength. Especially considering the harder you work, the hungrier you get. I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that he’s down to 320–or even 330–by the time the season rolls around.

I think it makes sense to move him to RG and have Liam or even Evans take over center, especially considering Bradford—who the coaches seem to be in love with—came in overweight himself. Unless we plan on running the ball a lot more than we did last year, and they just want a bunch of maulers inside. Which may be the case if they want to ease Myles into QB and build his confidence, and they think Davis-Price is better than last year and the light has finally come on for Emery.

The OL was good last year, but I don’t think they were as great as their accolades suggested. Burrow’s innate ability to know when to step up in the pocket and take off combined with Clyde’s ungodly ability to both break tackles and make guys miss masked some deficiencies. However, losing that many guys on the line is going to tough to overcome, talented as this year’s may be. It may take a hike to find the right combo and have them gel—which is why I think we might run the ball more early on than we think.
