Even if you had Elway, it would not guarantee a BCS national championship. Elway never beat CAL in his time at Stanford.
The famous play with the band was Cal beating Elway for the last time.

With Elway, LSU would be a favorite to win it all, but even with Elway, they could still get beat by Arky, or Bama, or maybe even Oregon, maybe even Miss State.

I think the notion that if LSU just had Mauck this time would be a cinch is blown out of proportion.

There is no proven LB corps.
There is no proven FB.

The lack of a proven FB bothers me a lot.
I dont just mean a blocking back. I mean a guy you hand the ball to with 3rd and 1 vs Bama with the game on the line, at your own 40, with 1 minute and 34 seconds to go. Bama has no time outs.
If you punt, Bama may drive and kick the winning field goal. If you make first down, you can go into the time honored formation to end the clock.
We dont have that FB. Not yet.
I realize we have some nice RBs. Ware. But we dont have a FB for the role I just described. Not that we know of. Maybe we do.
But not that we know of. Not that everyone would just get on and say, oh otto, its XXXX. No such thing, not yet.

I suppose we will just punt. New England ran for the first down against Indy and didnt make it, in the exact situation I just described, a couple years ago.
