It's LSU. It's always been LSU and it should always be LSU. Why? LSU will always be here. LSU is not going to move to say LA if they dont get a new stadium in x amount of years. Also, LSU is mostly local kids that are just playing for a better education.

The Saints had an explosion of fans in the last 5 years. Same can be said for LSU after 2003. You would have to go back to the 90's when both were irrelevant to get a true measure of real fans. That being said, its a pretty even split as for as football only. But when lsu was stinking it up in football during the 90's, our baseball team was racking up championships so I think the overall LSU brand is bigger.

If you go back to the 90's you would see a lot of Miami, Notre Dame and Florida State fans. I am from Baton Rouge and looking back at old yearbook pictures most of us wore the aforementioned schools sports gear.

I wore Miami clothes too because I was a bandwagon fan of theirs but I was still always an lsu fan at heart. Same can be said about people wearing cowboys clothes in the 90's. thats why I said a true gauge if real fans would be found during those years.

That's my point. You rarely saw Saints or LSU merchandise being worn back then.

The saints still had regularly televised games when they were terrible. It was a big deal in the 90's if LSU got a saturday night espn game. My grandparents had season tickets for both back then and it was never hard to get them to give away their tickets.

I went to Seattle couple years for Washington game. Idk how many other LSU fans went, but it was a ton.
Saints fans travel to away games in herds like that?
Not sure if pro football fans travel that way.
If the saints are so much more popular why not?
As a rule, professional fans do not travel like college fans do. Pro sports are not followed in that way.
For starters, places like Starkville, Oxford, Tuscalousa, Auburn, College Station, Fayetville...they are all within driving distance. Atlanta and Dallas are also within driving distance. For the Saints, only the Falcons, Texans, and Cowboys are within reasonable driving distance.
For a one time trip to Washington to see LSU play the Huskies, or a bowl game, that is an experience. When the Saints play the Seahawks, it is just a game.
On the other hand, the Saints are one of the better teams in the NFL when it comes to having Saints fans in opposing stadiums. It is a combo of travellers and transplants, but there is usually a good Saints presense when it comes to fans on the road over most other teams.
There are several times when the Saints have played in Dallas where the sumber of Who Dats in Jerry World was enourmous.

Most LSU players ARE FROM LA. most saints players are not from LA.

Prior to Drew Brees, two of the state's bigger cities, Lake Charles and Shreveport, weren't even Saints towns and regularly showed Cowboys games. It's always been LSU.
True dat

I'm a bigger Saints fan than LSU fan but yeah, prior to 2006, LSU had a stranglehold on the state. Since then, the Saints have gained popularity in the state but I'd wager LSU still leads. The bigger question might be if you took the entire country, if there were more Saints fans or LSU fans. It's probably still LSU though b/c LSU gets about 10,000 new fans every year (students)

And all SEC teams have deeper roots than ANY NFL TEAM. there isn't any NFL team with as many wins as LSU.

Apples and Oranges, but I would say that LSU is more popular statewide.
The reason the NFL works in a small southern market like NOLA is that you see Who Dats from all creeds and colors in the seats. All for one!
The Saints have a national draw and LSU doesn't. College football is much more regional than the NFL. Many of my associates are from the North and they could care less about college football. They are 100% pro. Pro football seems to be more urban and college more rural in most places.
