But you OTP people have no idea.
I hit the airport almost weekly, once ITP I never think it's too bad, worse part is 85 OTP but that really depends on the time of day.

Some of these folks should let us know what time of day they are talking about too. And whether they are talking about today or Friday.
Going across the top end after 4 on Friday afternoon might send the Columbus guy over the edge. Dreadful times.

40 to 85 through Charlotte, past Spartanburg and Greenville

Yep, the time of day is going to be the biggest factor. Tomorrow after 3pm it won't really matter which way you go, you're screwed regardless.

and the thing about my suggested route is you avoid the connector and grady curve, whether you go b'ham or montg.
connector is the dumbest traffic engineering feat in the history of mankind.
i've left atlanta at 4 on a friday on I20 east though and it was slow but not terrible.
and i repeat 78 and 316 are going to be BAD. it'll be slow going depending on timing to get from i20 to athens but better than taking and other seemingly shorter (hypotenuse) highway routes.

I85 to I285 east to I20 to exit 113 (hwy 83) through the little town of Madison on 278/441 (78 sucks bad. avoid avoid avoid) stay on 441/129 into athens.
Not a bad idea. But depending on the time of day, getting onto I-20 from 285 is terrible!
I don't find 78 too bad.

Another good way to make it up to Athens once you are in Atlanta is to stay on 85N up through to the Jefferson exit (137). Hang a right on to highway 129, go about 30 miles and you run right into Prince Avenue and downtown Athens. 129 is a 4 lane highway with a 55 speed limit but the Friday/Saturday before a big game there are so many people going 70 on it that the police don't bother.
Edit: Make sure you still watch carefully for police, they were notorious 10 years ago for busting people taking that way for speeding.

Going through Birmingham adds 15-30 minutes to the drive depending on time of day. The upside is you can make a rest stop in Tuscaloosa and leave a "layaway" down payment for November.
I live in ATL and always drink 3 cups of coffee and hold it in until I get to the Bama welcome center on I-85. Helps make that boring run more satisfying.

i can't even discuss this. horrible horrible horrible experience.
even putting that aside, this still requires you to go through atlanta on the connector (or gamble with 285) and then 85north otp, which is even worse than it was before peach lane. and 316 area will suck in friday/game-related traffic

Everyone knows you have to get on 190 at some poi t on the way to every LSU game.

true re: 285. I avoid it usually. there are some creative ways to get from 75/85 south to 20 east. that'll be the hairy part regarless of route.
re: 78, just a shite-ton of lights and stripmalls and traffic gets gnarly on friday afternoon. last UGA-LSU game in athens, we went 78 from decatur early on Saturday and it took forever even without traffic.
it's like Hardee's, Arby's, McDonald's, bank, bank, box store, rinse, repeat X10 the whole way.

Even with traffic I think staying on I85 is the best way, especially for someone who doesn't know the ATL area.
And on a Friday afternoon there is no way I'd get on 285, but that's just me.

Don't know if I'll drive by Tuscalooser yet. I may go and see my buddy for a few before continuing the drive.

285 from the airport to about Hwy 78 is the cleanest interstate in Atlanta most of the time.
Going up to Buford to your house off of 285 onto 85 is terrible.
Best bet for everyone is get to Atlanta before 3 or after 8.

I-10 to I-65 to I-85 to Hwy 316. Fastest by far.
