To run block or pass protect.

I say, pro offense 50/50 ratio.

Pass protection would be much more difficult.

Run block you have a definite assignment, and you go attack that assignment.

Pass blocking you protect a "hole" and you're taking a step back, so the D has momentum on you and you have to pick them up

Not to mention, who you block depends on who all is coming and who is dropping.
Much harder to identify your guy then engage

My nephew played for st George. He said you can get under their pads and they won't call holding. I guess once their back is to you it's considered holding?

Not all holding is illegal.

Holding their chest plate in front of you is 100 percent legal. It becomes illegal the second he gets outside of you or you grab outside of the defensive players chest

An Olinemans arms in pass pro should always be within his chest. If a guy goes around you, you use your feet to position yourself to block him

Footwork is a billion times more important than size for an offensive lineman. Especially in pass pro

Ok got it. Never made an effort to understand blocking that much. What's the difference with zone blocking vs ?

Yeah. Are guys are really big. Is this why we favor the run so much? Are their feet slower then a lighter tackle or guard?

Or our guys are big with great footwork, just need to get in the groove. I think our pass protection is ok for the first game, just wondering if it's a physical issue or a technical issue (picking up blocks and stuff like you say).

It really depends on the player.. Most will say run blocking is easier, to most this may be true but in many zone blocking schemes, run blocking can be as confusing as pass. Some guys love to road grade/drive blocking and others enjoy the agility/quickness needed for pass blocking.. Our team historically has been best when run blocking, our HC teaches to this not only in style but philosophy..

Zone blocking doesnt define one on one matchups for an olineman to block. Its all about double teams and getting to the second level

Its hard to get into because theres a ton of different variations of a zone concept

Well those guys at that level are freakin athletes and i dont think its a physical or athletic issue, they just made some mental mistakes and were probably sleepig at the wheel a bit

Footwork makes a great lineman just as much as it does for WRs and you work on that more than anything at practice
