Heart problem...he didn't have any heart. Poor attitude in the NFL ranks did him in. I was not only surprised to learn that but was disappointed.

you can't say that, because he has plenty of heart! he has so much heart, that he ate himself out of the nfl. there are not that many lineman in the nfl that can eat themselves out of the league. but he worked hard at it, and succeeded in becoming too fat to be effective.

All the heart in the world, wouldn't make up for being undersized and WAY under-strengthed to really make any sort of impact in the NFL.

The fact that he did what he did in college, with the physical limitations that became evident as soon as he stepped on an NFL field, sort of belies any talk about lack of "heart."

Kinda sad that we have all these people that belittle past and present LSU players.

Most are probably obese couch potatoes or nerdy computer geeks.
Let the man make it, he had a great career at LSU and gave us many good memories.

LSU players are like family to me, as long as they don't talk against LSU or put them in a bad light, no reason to trash them.

Chad was great in college, but I think his age helped (3yrs older than normal student athlete). I think that is a good point.

Lavalais had plenty of "heart"! The fact that he perservered for three years to try to get into LSU and his success on the field proved that. As far as his age being a help, it is probably true. Back when we played Colorado, they had a player that was around 24-25 yrs. old that had served in the Army and was an absolute dominant college player but he never made it in the pros.
It doesn't matter that Chad never made it big time in the NFL. He played a couple of years, got some bucks and hopefully is set for life. And his accomplishments at LSU should never be criticized.

He was the starter in ATL for 2 years at DT, that's pretty hard to do for a guy with no heart. Fact is he was told to beef up a little and he beef'd up a lot and got to big and never got into shape to play. Grady Jackson pulls it off but I don't know how, Chad couldn't and is now trying to start it over. I wish him well and thanks for the memories.

Probably isn't set for life - fifth rounders who play a couple of years and that's it don't make that much money. If he made the most of the money he got he's probably got a good start on retirement, but that's it.

Sorry it didn't work out better for him, but the NFL is a different animal. Given the knee problems some linemen have it may be a blessing.

So he was too small, was told to beef up, did so, and then he was too fat. He was released by two teams in a year.....ouch. That's tough.

He really didn't have the frame, of what the NFL sees as a prototypical D-lineman these days. "Bulking up" for him, just made him pudgier. There really wasn't much he could have done about it.
