What was your thought of our Center this year.

At the beginning of the year we were trying everyone at center because we though turner wasn’t the best for the job. Turner needed up starting and doing well but seemed out matched at times. I know we are looking at a portal center currently. Just curious with so many studs on the line do you think one takes over, do we get the portal guy, or will turner be back and holding it down.

I like Martinez. 6’4 340lbs. Bigger body.

Turners is limited in effectivenesss because of his size but is a great reserve. Dellinger needs a healthy off-season to get stronger and snap the ball. Right now I think Martinez is our best bet and because of Covid he has 2 more seasons of eligibility. With Bradford leaving I'd like to get the guy from Cincy to solidify the IOL

Kelly all but said he wants more size at the position
He tried to force Dellinger in that spot but probably just need to leave him at G
Turner and Martinez are servicable and give you some veteran play now at the position but I don't doubt Kelly wants to upgrade this spot

Turner was serviceable but lacks size and was pushed a lot. At first glance I like Martinez. I admit I haven’t watched film on him but didn’t notice him getting pushed like Turner. I trust the coaches and if they think we need someone I am all for it.

If the C from Cincy doesn’t worn out, then there’s nothing wrong with rolling with what we have at the position. Martinez snaps well, is bigger and looks like an upgrade. I’m not sure if Turner would stay if he loses the job in Spring, but he wound be an excellent bench guy with his experience.
Delly did ok to close the Citrus Bowl at C, as well. He should improve if he’s healthy this Spring. If you recall, he was injured and couldn’t practice last year, which really hurt him getting a handle on that position. We also just signed a Center, so it looks like we have things pretty well lined up. Unless an unquestionably better option comes available, it might be best to maintain the continuity that’s being built across the OL. We also have more critical needs elsewhere on the OL.

I'm not an expert but I thought Turner and Martinez were better than I expected.

Turner handled the cerebral part of the position really well and had solid technique. But due to his size and strength he lived about two yards behind the line of scrimmage.

I’d like to have Turner’s technique with Dellinger’s size. When the OL is on the field you can always quickly tell which is Turner. He’s a solid 25-30 lbs lighter than the other guys. He’s listed at 295 but he’s more like 280. The other guys have a little of an OL belly but Turner is very slim. He came here at 240 though so he’s done a really good job of putting on 40 lbs of muscle.

Perhaps the strength and nutrition program can get him another 15 pounds of muscle. He’s got the build for it. He has proven his technique and ability.

Dellinger was maybe one of the biggest factors in us losing to FSU
Turner could snap the ball but everything after that was meh.
Honestly people talk about the cerebral aspects and it’s not like we were really great at picking up blitzes or stunts.

I'm gonna disagree with that without stats to back me up, Sam.
Think back to all the guys who ran free blitzing while a G or the C was without someone to block the last two years before this one.
Now think of how many times it happened this year.
That came from recognition of what the DL was trying to do and putting the OL into the postitions to fend them off by the Center making the right reads/calls.
Same responsibilities as before but this season they were well executed which gave the Unit a good shot at succeeding.
That was almost exclusively young Mr Turner.

We were 116th in sacks allowed. As much as people want to blame that on Daniels (and a decent portion we’re on him holding the ball too long) a bigger portion was on the OL.

We were below in d average

Dellinger is a bad center. Do not need him there

Turner was the weakest link on the OL. Need more beef and that could be Martinez at 340 lbs
