What was the deal with these helmets? Has it been discussed?

I took this picture during the coin toss with the intention of sending to my buddy who is a FSU fan. I almost decided not to since it would be the helmets for the whole game but I swear I never saw them look like this again. was this exclusive for the captains or something? Some weird angle/shadows?

I noticed taht last night when they were showing the team in the tunnel. The helmet structure and the logo do not match up as well as the helmet shells of previous years. (I'm beginning to wonder if the people designing football helmets these days are the same ones who designed the body stye for the Nissan Pulsar back in the 80s.}
