Prior to the mid 1960's, most men still wore suits to the games! I'm talking coat and ties! go back and look at old footage.
These unspoken fashion trends and abrupt changes are actually quite remarkable.

Great question... I went to LSU games from 1969 to 2002 without ever thinking about wearing purple and gold. Marketing took over in the 90's. Add a NC plus peer pressure and even more marketing and advertising and if you don't wear P&G, you are an odd ball... Hey.. spear Wear right!

It may have something to do with the fact that the late 90's was the time that "Bring back the magic" was going on and lasted on into the early success of the 2000's.

A lot to do with marketing and the fact that men have shifted their dress, men wearing all sorts of colors these days. I would say I didn't wear many purple shirts until I attended LSU, now I can't pick out what purple shirt to wear. Even yellow was associated as something a female would wear when I was younger.

interesting, a color change... I do believe in trends. I can see that happening.
As recently as the mid 70's people dressed up for the games. Ties, dress shirts, and Sport coats in the later games (Oct-Nov).
Personally, I like see that return.(Sport Coats, Dress Shirts, and Ties) But I realize some would always like to wear the Jersey's and Coaches polos.

'm not sure why that is. Prior to the mid 1990's, if you wore school colors or LSU logos, you were certainly admired for your team spirit, but it just wasn't nearly as ubiquitous as it is now.
