"Lucky goofball that recruits well" Seriously, that is what many outside of LSU think of him and always will until he gets another NC all on "his own".
How many people?
Who are they?

but you cannot argue with the 3 national championships, including an undefeated season, that Saban has. Objectively, Saban is the better coach. I think every coach, especially SEC coaches that compete with him, is in Saban's shadow until one of them wins more championships.

Really don't give a shite about Saban's shadow.
As for Les, he will have won one more NC than most coaches at LSU and elsewhere.

Other than the negative nellies that hang out in here? I'm talking about people that know something.
But humor me. Give me a credible source to back up your statement.

Miles legacy will be accurately judged after his retirement.
His win/ loss record has been impressive. Sure there has been mistakes. No coach is perfect.
As we look at the problems other programs have had recently, we need to address the way Miles has run this program. Penn state is on death row. Joepa destroyed Penn state. It wasn't just or only Joe's fault but it was on his watch. What will be his legacy?
Look at ohio state. Sweater vest man Tressel left Ohio state in sanction hell. What's his legacy?
What about USCe? What's going to happen to north Carolina or Miami ?
There is more to a coach's legacy than just wins and losses. Miles has ran a clean program. Sure we had some problems, which were corrected, and some missteps. Our kids are getting their degrees at the highest percentage in recent history. We have much less police problems than many schools. I know, shady's was a blemish , but not the norm. Miles will have a great legacy at LSU if he continues as he his doing now.
Great seasons, national powerhouse, good kids, high grad rate and LSU's brand name is as high as ever.
Miles has done a fine job so far. His legacy is still a masterpiece in the making. He makes mistakes but his succeeds more than he fails by a long shot.

It meant if Miles never wins another NC here I don't think he will be remembered well. I believe people will think he should have won more because of the talent we've had. I personally think he will win a couple more before hes done.

saint4life,
welcome to the rant. you have gotten quite a response to your post. you might notice that there are both positigahs and negatigahs on the rant. your original question is legitimate. your additional responses easily demonstrate your negative attitude.
you might know that when people converse, only 10% are the actual words to a conversation. the other 90% are things like body posture, intelligence, psychological health, tone, strength, maturity, etc.
you show great weakness in personality. your need to exhibit criticism and opinions are just a reflection of your childhood nurturing. you are a great exhibit of a badly damaged childhood which is only duplicated in your negativity.
you are welcome to the rant, but, please understand, that you are being looked at as a rat with fleas. you will be in company with many other rats that cannot maintain any sense of fairness. you are pessimist, and sadly, you don't even like yourself.
whereas, we will even love you when you hate.
but.....
haters gotta hate.
clm is the greatest lsu coach ever, go suck saban's balls on the alabama boards.

On a related note, what does he need to come out of Saban's shadow? Is there any chance he could retire as a better coach than Saban both in people's perception and in terms of championships won?
I think that you don't like Miles that much. While that's ok and you're completely entitled to your opinion, *singsong* your bias is showing!
Miles is already one of the top 4 coaches in LSU history along with Cholly Mac, Saban, and Dietzel, and barring any major collapses or scandals, will be the GOAT at LSU at the end of his career, without any more championships.
My listing above is up for criticism or additions.

nice alter dickbag.
Miles IS the winningest coach in LSU history. The just wins.
over the NCG but that's better than losing to ULM and Utah (UAB for and LSU perspective)
Truth is, most wins, no OOC regular season losses to this point, only undefeated regular season, NC. Thanks Les

Great question! I always thought of Miles (in the past) as a super recruiter and motivator and a good/quality coach - similar to Dale Brown in basketball. He jumped up a few notches when he won against USCE, Ala., and Fla. with some trickeraton in recent years IMHO.
Unfortunately in sport you are only as good as your last game perception wise so he really dropped a notch or two on the totem pole in that regard after the WTF was he thinking coaching performance in BCS title game.
However, had he won R2 against Nick the Prick he would be considered the best in college football heading into 2012. That's a pretty good jump from a hard-headed moron but that's the way it is in this day and age of what have you done for me lately.
Granted we were all disappointed in the seemingly lack of preparation for the title game and unwillingness to change. Not sure it would have altered the outcome. It was Alabama's night. Give the Tide credit.
To make a long response even longer (FU to the TL and DNR adolescents of the world) Miles will go down in LSU history/legacy as the best coach ever. Not bad at all. LSU is proud to have him around no matter how much of a dumbass he is perceived to be. I can tell you one thing. Not playing Lee will haunt him the rest of his coaching career and some people will NEVER forgive him. At the moment I'm not proud to say but I am one of them. I'll get over it when we win it all in 2012. NEXT!

The only time I thought LSU had superior talent and truly underperformed under Miles was 2006. 11-2 was nice but that should've been a NC.

Winning is the almighty key in football. Win and people will love you, lose and they'll find someone else.

Mostly agree w/ Dr. D.
Legacy:
A fine man, very good coach and great recruiter.
Given to spectacular and inexplicable game time -errors and lapses.
If he does not win BCS this year, will never do so again.

For all of the sunshine pumping in here you'd think Miles had done more than fall arse backwards into a nat. title.Dude is a fantastic recruiter, and a mediocre coach, who in most years is good for 1 wtf loss.
He runs a very clean program, and should be applauded for it.
Sorry to all his fans,he'll never be considered on par with Saban, short of winning more titles than him, which ain't gonna happen.
If he doesn't win it this year,he won't get another imo.
Overall,he seems to be a great guy who is very loyal to his players,in this regard he's far superior to Saban.
He'll be in the discussion for best ever at LSU,but I think he has always underachieved for the most part
