atltiger6487 is right you guys - if we don't put our heads together, figure this out and let Aranada know how to fix the defense we'll be in deep shite later in the year.
so let's hear it. i'll take notes and compile everything and then word cloud it to see what the top issues are. there are no bad ideas here so don't be shy.

Zone will be eaten alive by Steve sarkisians scheme. We need to get in their face and play man I trust a healthy Fulton an stingley to hold their own

I don’t like holding back the blitzes until the second half either but most of the big plays and conversions we gave up were because of player mistakes. Aranda actually called a good game Trask was better than we thought and Jones creates real problems when he was inserted into the game.

I have not seen this mentioned yet but if you’re going only by score, our defense was helped in the second half by our offense being so explosive and unstoppable. We got them in a hole and they could not stop us. Mullen knew he’d need to go for touchdowns instead of field goals. It gave our defense an extra chance to keep the score down on each drive or possibly get a turnover. For those going strictly by stats I think this makes assessing our defensive performance tricky. We were not stopping them from moving the ball in the second half but we did stop them from scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

After Florida’s first drive of the second half they went punt, punt, Int, turnover on downs so we did stop them on 4 of 5 second half drives.

Part of me is wondering if this is all part of Coach O's master game plan. Bama not having much film on our man defense and blitz packages outside the second half of the Florida game tells me he has alot left in his back pocket. By playing zone all season and not worrying about if Vandy scores 38 because we scored 66 does kind of tell me he knows our guys can play man but just wanted our guys to have game experience in zone. Our defense really isnt far off the mark of taking the next step of being elite and that second half showed it.
Marcel Brooks is a freaking stud. Let Divinity rest this weekend and bring him back against Bama.

I love it when the defensive genius rushes 3 and drops 8 when they're at our 5 yd line. How'd that work? Changed philosophy in the 2nd half with much success. Will say again, if Aranda is such a genius why does he continually give the other teams "gift" pts? We were down 21-28 at one time!!

My guess is he’s dropping 8 a lot because we haven’t been able to get home with 4 while Chassion and divinity have been out. When you drop 8 you’re playing a lot of zone and the problem with that is we don’t have a true free safety or “center fielder” and our linebackers blow too many coverages. Our guys aren’t used to playing zone and we have a lot of mistakes and busted coverages with it. I do think guys like Ika, Fahoko and Farrell can put pressure on the passer but they need to be on the field to do it so if rushing 3 is the plan those guys have to play a lot more.

Not really...How are we getting pressure up the middle?

Everyone plays zone inside the 10 yard line for obvious reasons. We got beat because our linebackers blew coverage on nearly every play down there not because of the calls.

Aranda needs to take responsibility for the defense not playing the correct assignment but not for the call itself.

With that being said, I wonder why we stopped dropping 8 in the second half of the Florida game? It definitely worked! It seems like we were still running zone with those guys in there as well

With the 3 man rush we had a couple individual plays, Fahoko, Thomas and Ika all made effort plays. We went to that express type package on 3rd and long and it worked for us. We needed to play man and get quick pressure and it resulted in the sacks for Chassion and Brooks.

Your linebackers are the heart of any defense and our unit just keeps making critical errors. I’m not gonna rip college kids by name but the biggest percentage of problems comes from this unit. I also think not having a true FS hurts us as well. Maybe Aranda needs to use a hybrid look on distance downs even when it’s second down. Maybe try moving Stevens up to a joker/LB type position along side Clark with someone like Vincent at FS. Move Delpit back to SS where he can blitz and disrupt near the LOS and use Vincent’s speed to play center field.

My best guess is that he doesn't trust our personnel in pass coverage is trying to implement a bend but don't break philosophy. Make the other team work down the field slowly and hope they make a mistake.
Not saying it's working, just a guess at what he is thinking.

Dropping 8 in zone vs a good offensive staff and QB is death. They will pick out matchups they want and just eat you alive. You are making it easy. The 3 man rush didn’t work a single time we ran it, and I don’t think we ran it at all in the 2nd half.

My best guess (since we're all guessing here) is that Aranda knows LSU has a special offense this year capable of putting up serious points on anybody.
You’re the second guy to go down this road, and it’s delusional. Aranda was trying his utmost to stop every drive. His strategy in the first half worked great, but players dropped interceptions, and Trask executed beautifully on several third and longs.
He changed things up in the second half, which is good practice, and things that were falling Florida’s way started falling our way. They got called for holding; we got a couple of sacks; and we got the interception.
