There was the article pre-season about him impressing the coaching staff and putting on lots of lbs carrying bricks in his backpack to and from class. But he has barely seen the field this season even though our D-line has been weak?

He played in the rotation in the first two games, but I haven't seen him since.

All the talk was just about him gaining weight and carrying bricks around and the change to DL. There was never any talk about him looking great on the DL itself.

Are we watching the same d line? They haven’t done a great job at getting pressure but They have been really good and besides the Ole Miss second half this team has been great against the run.

Not big enough to play DE in a 3-4 and not athletic enough to play OLB.
Probably transfer after the season.

Lewis Neal was a very good DT/DE for us at 6'0 and 270. Cherry is now up to 6'3 265. By next season he should be ready to compete. I imagine the body transformation requires time for him to adjust to playing at that weight. We'll see what the offseason does for him.

Yes but Lewis Neal has freaky strength in that small frame to go with a sharp mind and high football IQ.

Cherry is in the 280 range, he's way big enough to play 3-4 end. not all our ends should be 300+ pounds, we need some lighter guys, one of our biggest weaknesses up front IMO is we have too many big guys who arent athletic enough to handle more mobile QBs or speedier backs. We need more Justin Thomas sized guys to play more often.

Shea was gushing about him all preseason. We are just very veteran heavy on the DL.

You should put down the crack pipe for at least a week first before you start posting.

Jarell Cherry, along with TK McClendon and Soni Fonua will be big contributors along the DL next season.

our DE's are alot like DT's in a 4/3 (but Faster) 6'3-6'4 290-300lbs... its a defense that relies heavily on 5 guys (three lineman/two LBs) stopping the run vs their 5 lineman so that we can rush the passer with one more or drop 6 into coverage... thats what makes running the 3/4 so much better than the 4/3... its multiple and you can do way more with it vs the spread teams... its why everyone is running it now... you can blitz from anywhere and still drop 6 into coverage... kinda like how Chaisson will drop back to the middle and we could send queen...

its also allows a three safety look.. thats how you can send delpit or stevens in to rush the passer as well... those guys are fast and cant get there with open lanes created by stunts... its why those hybrid guys are so important... like stevens, and brooks...

I'm not trying to be debbie downer, but it's probably more likely all 3 arent contributors than all 3 being big contributors next year.

I have some faith in Cherry progressing, first year on the DL in a 3-4 is rough to transition to from LB. Fonua just doesnt look in shape at all when you see him on sidelines, McClendon who knows, he came in as a TE, he couldnt do anything there so they moved him to defense. Have my doubts there.

i agree... i think we will have some freshman playing next season... Guillory and Roy could step in pretty quick.. if Burch comes he's playing Day 1.
