He got lucky he squeezed into the NFL at the last minute of high dollar rookie contracts and when Al Davis was still alive. He had talent coming out of his ears, but nothing in between them. No work ethic and suddenly a millionaire several times over...he saw no reason to keep playing. There is no other explanation.
Even when he was working on his big comeback, and got in shape, the minute he won that settlement for like 7 million he quit immediately and went back to doing nothing.
