The video was clear as day…Moo St player touched it well before it crossed the 10yd mark. But Leach is a slimeball and he seemed like he knew something about the rules that no one else did which led him to challenge. Not that keeping that timeout would have helped much but if my math is correct they could have gotten the ball with a few seconds left. Anyone else with any insights?

It was clear as day in the Auburn game too and they still got it wrong. He was probably hoping for another frick up from the refs like he got in the game they played vs Memphis.

I wondered the same (Im sure many of us did.) They would have gotten the ball with about 25 secs… That was a BAD decision.

The MSU player got pushed into the ball by one of our players.

Leach might have thought that made it a live ball.

The espn announcer summed it up pretty good. Said Leach was betting on the incompetence of SEC officials.

Just desperation. Apparently all his arguing was that he wanted them to look at it on their own. His post-game press conference referenced replay being used that way the previous week.

They had nothing to lose. A bad call from the replay booth gives them a shot. If it stands they lose.

That the hand of LSU's player touched the ball first?

It was a long shot for sure.

I think he was hoping it was a rules infraction since an LSU player pushed an MSU player into the ball before anyone else touched it. There was a long discussion with the refs both before and after the review so it must have been a discussion about rules.

It was a desperate gamble. That’s all he really had left

Well, they could have forced a punt with about 30 seconds needing a FG to tie.

Indeed. Surely he had help from the booth to see that his player touched it. Challenging ended the game, however remote their chance of winning would have been.

He wanted to raise hell since he was screwed last week.

But was that not one of the worst onside kicks you have ever seen?

Pirates don't have to explain anything.

To be honest , I think he was just using his challenge as a last ditch effort but didn’t give full thought that this would cost him his final timeout. The look on his face and interaction with the ref afterward gave me that impression.

“I have a challenge. I might as well use it…. Oh shite, I forgot it will cost me a timeout”

He was hoping that it wasn’t a rule, but more of a guideline.

This.
If he doesn’t challenge but uses his time out, under all scenarios, his odds are less than 5%.
But if he relies on SEC officiating, his odds get better. He’s at home and has already gotten a coupla calls.
Rational decision.
