after almost every game.

Brady left the cupboard EXTREMELY thin when he was fired. Yes. We had Tasmin, MT, Garrett Temple, etc. That's it. They were all upperclassmen. We had two solid underclassmen: Storm Warren and Bo Spencer. That's it. Our program was in a mess, and it was going to take a minimum of two years to get out of the mess Brady left behind.

Did Johnson make mistakes? Yes. I believe he should have gone the JUCO route, and I believe he would admit that he made recruiting mistakes his first two years. However, we're in better position for sustained success than at any point during Brady's tenure WITHOUT question right now.

I actually cannot remember a time when we've been in better position for sustained success. LOOK AT OUR FREAKING LINEUP.

Freshmen: Hickey, O'Bryant, Isaac
Sophomores: Stringer and Turner
Juniors: Hamilton

That's a solid nucleus. Hickey is the best freshman point guard we've had since Torris Brite. O'Bryant will be a serious player. Hamilton is one of the top big men in the SEC. I'm down on Turner, but we've all seen what he's capable of. Stringer is a decent player.

We return all of these players next year, while we add exactly what we need: an explosive scorer at two guard. IF Trent Johnson lands Ricardo Gathers, which I predict he will, this will be our lineup:

PG: Hickey (So.)
SG: Stringer (Jr.)
SF: Turner (Jr.)
PF: JOBIII (So.)
C: Hamilton (Sr.)

Bench: Malik Morgan, Ricardo Gathers, John Isaac, Eddie Ludwig

That's a solid lineup, and guess what? Everyone on that lineup sans Hamilton will be scheduled to return for ONE MORE YEAR minimum. We're also in solid shape to land Jarell Martin from what I've read, who some believe to be the best player in Louisiana right now.

Let's look at the 2013-2014 lineup:

PG: Hickey (Jr.)
SG: Stringer (Sr.)
SF: Turner (Sr.)
PF: Gathers (So.)
C: JOBIII (Jr.)

Bench: Malik Morgan and John Isaac

Following 2013-2014, we'll be slated to return three of five starters.

Some of you just cannot see the forest because of the trees.

It's fair to judge Trent this year, but temper your criticism. This ship is ABSOLUTELY headed in the right direction. We're 13-9 (3-5) in a much improved SEC with a hellish January schedule. We've lost two games we shouldn't have lost: USA and Coastal Carolina. We beat Marquette, and we've been competitive in every game we've played with the exception of UK and @Bama.

I will criticize Trent if he doesn't land Gathers. That's his opportunity to land his first Louisiana stud. Then, he needs to follow that up by landing Jarell Martin. If he does that, we're going to be a consistent NCAA Tourney team IMO.

I think you will get your wish, as I don't see Alleva admitting he made a mistake as long as there is any hope.

T Johnson looks clueless during games. I really do like the guy as an individual. I actually think he's a class act. But he has disappointed, a lot.

Don't be so sure this will be the case...

I could see Turner moving to the 2 and Morgan playing the 3 (or vice versa) to start next season with Stringer coming off the bench.

I agree with everything you said though

First in the SEC, always in the tournament, just like we've been in the last twenty years.

I like your post. Agree with it all.

But it's TD...
A loss = Bitch about the coach
A win = Bitch about the players

3 or 4 more SEC wins this year, then sign Rico Gathers. The rest will start to take care of itself.

LSU should be competitive.
which for me =
in SEC final game at least 1 of 5 years
in Big Dance 9 of 10 years.
or relatively close to this.

You're basing this on what, historically?

Honestly, if those two don't get their act together, we may be better off with Morgan and Isaac. The two-shorty lineup bothers the crap out of me.

Dale Brown's era..so it should be doable..
we went to the Big Dance 13 years in a row,
so 8 of 10, 9 of 10 should be doable.

1976-1977 LSU 5th
1977-1978 LSU 3rd
1978-1979 LSU 1st
1979-1980 LSU 2nd
1980-1981 LSU 1st
1981-1982 LSU 5th
1982-1983 LSU 2nd
1983-1984 LSU 3rd
1984-1985 LSU 1st
1985-1986 LSU 5th
1986-1987 LSU 6th
1987-1988 LSU 4th
1988-1989 LSU 4th
1989-1990 LSU 2nd
1990-1991 LSU 1st

a voluntary pay cut

his salary does not equate to on-court success

Yeah, you're right.

The NCAA basketball landscape hasn't changed AT ALL in 25 years.

The only school in the SEC to do this over the last 10 years is Kentucky.

So to you, we could not be one of the 65 teams 8 of 10 years ?

How about LSU to pony up, hire a top 10 coach (best they can buy....which is alot if they so chose) and make LSU basketball mean something again.

all i want from trent is for him to consistently make the tourney. i don't think that is asking too much. i'm not asking for sweet 16's or final four's...just make the tournament!

It's a lot harder for major conference teams to be consistently "in the tournament than it was 25 YEARS AGO.

People really, REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY need to let that time frame go.

Florida is the second best team in the SEC over the last 20 years and has been 7 times in the last 10 years, MSU is the 3rd best, and has been 6 times.

Talent is FAR less concentrated at "major" programs than ever before. Year in, year out, you can count on Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Syracuse..... the next 100 or so teams is an absolute crap shoot.

I think a FAR more realistic goal for LSU EVERY year is to compete in the west, be above .500 in the SEC, and COMPETE for a tournament bid.

Agreed--a tournament trip to NCAA every year would be nice--that would indicate a competitive team and program. BTW, Stringer's position for next year--sub off the bench--can't shoot well enough to warrant a starting nod.

No doubt. I love when people use money as an excuse not to fire Johnson. They say, "Well, if you want a good coach, you're gonna have to pay them." I think they just parrot the crap that others spew like it's the truth.

Yes, even Forbes recognizes how overpaid Trent Johnson is.
