He'd go from coaching against the average Joes he's been up against to facing Spurrier, Saban, Richt, Miles.
No guarantees that what he's done at Bowling Green and Utah translates.

its comical how many names on this list dont have anything close to the resume Miles does.

I think Jack Del Rio would be a good choice

Prior to LSU? If you're including LSU, you're missing the point.

did not read the whole thread, and I am not a Miles hater... actually I think he is very good, not great.
But the only coach in my opinion that fits the bill is Butch Davis.

what is it about Brian Kelly that tickles your fancy? was it going 9-3 and losing to Louisville, West Virginia and Pitt in 2007? or going 9-3 and losing to OU, UConn and VTU in 2008?
You say that like Cincy was the mecca of college football before he got there.

what is it about Brian Kelly that makes him so attractive? He is a football coach in the Big East, what does that mean exactly in the grand scheme of things?
That means he is just like EVERY other elite coach in the game today. None of them started there head coaching gigs with top 5 teams.

it has to be his 19-16 record at CMU that has them in love with Brian Kelly
Sure, you could just look at that and think that's not that great.
Or you could look at ALL the facts and you'd know that CMU had won 3 games or less 3 out of the 4 previous seasons. In 3 seasons, he went 4-7, 6-5, and 9-4. That's damn impressive if you ask me.
Then he went to Cincy, 1st season, they win there 1st 10 game season since 1949. He's 31-6 at freaking Cincinnati for crying out loud, and you're just shooting his record down like it's nothing, lol.

What CFB head coach is acceptable to the Miles haters?
We have seen more than enough Les Miles hate here through the years, which makes me wonder. Who is a head coach that is completely acceptable to the common fan on the rant?
Who is the guy that has his program where it should be year after year, always hires the best assistants, always recruits and lands the best players, and doesn't make the kind of in-game mistakes that are unacceptable to the many experts here?
Who is the guy that can run a program that always reloads, always contends for at least his Conference Championship and never has a "down" year?
You are asking a question that only has one answer for most LSU fans who despise Miles and that answer is Nick Saban. Nevermind that Saban is not coming back to LSU. The LSU fans who want Saban back will waste the rest of their lives as LSU football fans bashing Miles or whoever the head coach is for every bad call, missed assignment, and loss, and tell you how if Saban was the head coach at LSU such mistakes and losses would never have happened. Right.

the answer is NO ONE because fans have unrealistic expectations of ALL CFB COACHES

read the thread again. Saban was torn apart worse than Miles during his time at LSU and that was on a tigerdroppings that was 20% of its size and scope of today.

exactly
and like it has been said before, some LSU "fans" would rather be right about Miles than win

+1
Kelly has one of the most impressive resumes of any coach around.
Central Michigan had never won five games in their history prior to Kelly; he won six and then nine in years two and three. Cincinnati had been to a bowl game once in fourty-seven years prior to Kelly; they've been to a bowl game every year he's been there and has won ten games twice in two years.
The guy is a fantastic coach.

Miles, 28-21 as a head coach prior to coming to LSU which is what you have to compare him with to other coaches that haven't been giving a top coaching job yet, and 16-16 in conference
Brian Kelly 31-6 at Cincy >>>> Les Miles 28-21 at OSU
