Dr. Scott Hanna
this is who i was referring to earlier

my point was, someone was criticizing the credentials of the new directors. i can't imagine that lsu didn't contact scott to ask him what he knew. of course they did. so, it's not like these guys were foisted upon lsu sight unseen.

It saddens me to see a shrinking band. The march down victory hill, pregame, halftime, and even the song they play after the alma mater at the end of the game are special to me. Collectively, they hold a place in my heart for game day that rivals the game itself.
first, we don't know what the future holds. second, i never advocated for the quality to diminish. i'm responding to irish's irrational criticism of the new directors. the new directors are not letting ANY of tiger band's traditions be eroded. for now, the gg's are still on the field. they haven't been featured as much and as i said, i don't want to see them sidelined. we'll see

Sad that you have an ax to grind with Frank
i just stated things how they were. if i had an axe to grind, i would be badmouthing him, which i haven't done. he had good qualities and bad ones. how can anyone deny that? you are acting like you know something you don't. i've asked you to substantiate it and you haven't. all you have done is distract and attack me and romanticize bovi/linda, etc.

I'm sorry about whatever it was that he did to you
yeah, like i was the only one. i've heard frank dress down many really good players with personal insults. he taught by intimidation. i don't remember him ever being some highly sought after summer clinician at ccm or tanglewood or eastman or interlochen or sewanee or ravinia or whatever. his rep is being a bit overblown in this thread

How do you know that anyone at LSU contacted Dr. Hanna? Just curious how you know, since you seem certain that they did.

There are fewer students to recruit because music programs are not valued by the powers that be, Music education is considered a peripheral frill. Trickle up issues are impacting LSU's Golden Band from Tigerland.

I disagree because there was an article in Halftime magazine recently about how enrollment in college bands across the US is booming. Everywhere but LSU. Sad.

Let's see.....no more GG features, No more full band trips during the regular season (unless they happen to be in a kick-off classic), not the "envy" of the SEC because of quality, instrumentation, etc, etc, etc, etc.

You are really something. Scott WAS contacted, in 2010.....he was passed over as a possible ASSISTANT when Frank retired. Wow.

What an unbelievably disappointing thread. There have been like 3 total pictures posted in a thread with “golden girls” and “tiger girls” in the title and it somehow devolved into a band nerd circle jerk

Pathetic

the Tigerettes were more prestigious. There was a feature twirler at pregame and she could grab the attention of the entire stadium

I really really really wish Tiger Band would reintroduce a feature twirler. Not an entire line. Just one twirler in gold. Marching beside the drum major. Fire. Whirling batons. LSU needs this.

Surely does not help that both teams had auditions on the same day. Need a little more communication between Band Department and Athletic Department

I've seen you just recently reference the band not going on full band trips in and around the whole Alleva sideline safety thing.....that it was Athletics that was responsible for all of this. We all know that Athletics foots this expensive bill and ultimately they decide whether the whole band goes to games or not....School of Music would not be the ultimate decision makers of this.

I know this post has referenced issues with prospective band members...hashed and rehashed. And yes, also hashed and rehashed the numbers in different sections impacting the overall sound (fwiw I agree with those who suggest that the sound quality is JUST FINE and they sound fantastic, though I would like more tubas for deeper sound). In terms of the numbers, leave the "enrollment" numbers alone, because the band is back up to almost 325. So its enrollment numbers are just fine. You may dislike the instrumentation distribution but stop talking about the overall number, because it's back up to just about normal. Also fwiw I understand that they even cut prospectives to keep the quality intact. Read that again. Prospectives were cut.

Not anymore.....the school of music (dean & Damon) make ALL of the decisions. Alleva just writes a check.

color guard numbers are so low, they had to resort to letting a guy spin a flag

I mean either that or he was legitimately better than some of the talent that tried out. I don't think numbers have anything to do with it, honestly. I'd like to invite you to watch him during halftime. I don't know him personally, but I guarantee you he puts more effort into the work than some of the girls out there seem to.

Golden Girls= dance team for football season. They march in the halftime show and dance when appropriate. Historically, they have worn either a white or golden colored uniform.

COLOR GUARD (what you called the flag girls)= spin flags around, frame the band the whole time they're on the field, and typically wear a purple uniform.

I think we can agree that these two groups are certainly not synonymous, though both are auxiliary units in the band. If you're going to try and differentiate between the Tiger Girls and the Golden Girls, who are both two different groups of fabulous dancers, please don't stick the "flag girls" in it.

According to members of the color guard, this (winter guard) is one of the reasons their numbers have declined.

This can only be true if the girls are forced to do the winterguard. Considering there were girls on the team for football season that opted out of doing winterguard, I'm safe in my assumption that they have the freedom to either stay or go. Unsure of your familiarity with winterguard, but I don't believe this for a second. There's no one that can force them to participate.

You're saying Athletics would just say "hey, we think it would be great to pay for the entire band of 325+ to go to BFE for a football game." Buses, hotel, meals, you name it. That they have no say in this?

After an investigation involving Tiger Band $ followed by a very public lawsuit against F King Alexander, the School of Music and LSU HR alleging misuse of funds by the SOM....after that, Athletics just says "let's give the School of Music absolute control of Tiger Band and they can decide everything." No way they will just turn their backs to how $ is being spent. Roy King's lawsuit ensured that they will always have oversight of their money. Your assertions are nuts.
