It is still the early years for the LSU Winterguard, which I am so glad came into fruition. There are issues with it that haven't been worked out just yet, as there are with every young organization. I don't think it's worth blaming the fact that the Winterguard exists for the low numbers on the team, but rather investigate exactly why the girls feel like they HAVE to stay. I understand that it takes a lot out of your personal life and time spent studying- I do. I myself was in the sport for 10 years, even while at LSU. I just don't agree with the blame for the low numbers on the field for the guard being given solely to the fact that there is an option for them to spin on a competitive team in the spring. And that's essentially what it is, an option.

According to members of the color guard, this (winter guard) is one of the reasons their numbers have declined.

This can only be true if the girls are forced to do the winterguard. Considering there were girls on the team for football season that opted out of doing winterguard, I'm safe in my assumption that they have the freedom to either stay or go. Unsure of your familiarity with winterguard, but I don't believe this for a second. There's no one that can force them to participate.
Golden Girls= dance team for football season. They march in the halftime show and dance when appropriate. Historically, they have worn either a white or golden colored uniform.

COLOR GUARD (what you called the flag girls)= spin flags around, frame the band the whole time they're on the field, and typically wear a purple uniform.

I think we can agree that these two groups are certainly not synonymous, though both are auxiliary units in the band. If you're going to try and differentiate between the Tiger Girls and the Golden Girls, who are both two different groups of fabulous dancers, please don't stick the "flag girls" in it.

color guard numbers are so low, they had to resort to letting a guy spin a flag

I mean either that or he was legitimately better than some of the talent that tried out. I don't think numbers have anything to do with it, honestly. I'd like to invite you to watch him during halftime. I don't know him personally, but I guarantee you he puts more effort into the work than some of the girls out there seem to.
I apologize if it sounded like I meant the talent of the musicians. I know several members of Tigerband and they're some of the best musicians I know. However, one of the previous posts mentioned that interest in the CGs and GGs were down from past years, possibly going more towards the Tiger Girls; that was the talent that I was talking about.

Also, if the band were truly moving towards a DCI look, perhaps one day we will see the colorguard integrated into the show drill more than on the outsides like a picture frame. Just a thought, I could be wrong. :dunno:

I'm almost positive it was the "One More Time, Chuck Corea" show for the 2014 season.
It's really sad, because it does appear that the talent is going away from the band. There were years in the not-so-distant past (around 2011) where they had to actually cut people that tried out for the colorguard as well, and only a few years later there were multiple auditions to get more people to try out because not enough people were interested. I'm not saying that it is the admin's problem, but it is pretty fishy. I feel like that same thing that contributed to this issue may have had something to do with the lack of interest in the GGs as well. :geauxtigers:
