We don't have to beat Alabama to be considered a playoff contending team

The committee was so impressed with Texas A6M this year that they put moved them UP from #6 to #4 after a 19-point loss to Alabama. Les Miles wasn't getting it done because he wasn't just losing to Bama. He was losing to Arkansas, Ole Miss, Auburn on a semi-regular basis--and badly, if I may add. If we just take care of the rest of the league and whatever happens with Bama happens, we're still right in it. If we beat Arkansas and Ole Miss in 2015 after losing 30-16 to Bama, we are #5 and in the discussion at least for a bid.

And, yes, Johnny Jones needs to go.

It shouldn't be a requirement for a coach in their first few seasons. Even this year we were a missed field goal and something extra on offense from a possible win. Take care of the rest of the schedule and you can rest starters, we will be right there.

Who is the "we" you speak of? Change your favorite team or STFU.

PS
You are stupid to think we don't have to beat Bama to be considered a play off contending team.

This was by far our worst offensive game against Saban. Easily. It wasn't even close.

If we perform at the 2014, or even 2015 level, we win given how well Aranda's defense contained them.

Maybe LSU doesn't need to beat Bama to be a playoff contender. But why get to the playoff and lose again to a Bama team you can't beat?

We shouldn't lower our expectations to the point where we just know a "W" isn't going to come against Alabama. With the talent at LSU and finally some hope in offensive coaching, there's no remaining excuse for the Tigers to not go .500 with Bama.

If our only loss is to Bama in the regular season, we're in the playoff. Look at Ohio State this year. They lost to Penn State and are in.

It isn't that easy for Tier 2 programs. LSU would have to have a lot of other things shake out to get that kind of benefit.

We are not Ohio State or Bama in the eyes of ESPN. We cannot just finish third in our conference and be given a bid. It doesn't work that way for teams like LSU.

Wrong. We have to beat Bama. And for more reasons than the playoffs.

Tried a feed like this before. Didn't work. It's logical but everyone is so consumed with beating bama that they don't care.

If LSU could win every game but Bama every year and finish 11-1 (or 10-1 because at least one game will get cxl'd), I would take it. Sign me the f*ck up.

But we lose to teams we shouldn't lose to like Auburn, Florida and sh*tty Wisconsin.

We have to knock Bama out of the playoff picture to win it all, though. Sure, we can get to the playoff at 11-1, but guess who's still there at the end of the road? To be the best you have to beat the best. That simple. We can't just avoid having to beat Bama.

I don't know why you are getting so many down votes. What you say is absolutely true. Our goal should be to win championships. That certainly can be done even if we lose to Alabama in the regular season. Assuming this happens, we can be champs by:

(a) beating Bama in the playoff (sort of like they did to us in 2012);

(b) having some other team like Ohio State beat them in a semi-final; or

(c) Bama doesn't make it in because, perhaps they have 2 losses.

The worst case is LSU loses to either Bama or someone else in the playoffs. That's a top 5 year all-time for LSU, isn't it?

If Les had beaten Ole Miss and Arkansas last year and the team continued to look at least as good as they did against Florida last year then we have a good shot at going. He would certainly still be coach now.

If a 10-0 loss to Bama is LSU's only loss this year, they probably go to the playoffs.

I would be thrilled with a natty even if it meant losing to Bama in the regular season. No one at Bama thinks their 2011/2012 championship is in any way tarnished. Neither would we.

I think it is a sound strategy to quit thinking of how many times we've lost to Bama and just concentrate on execution, discipline and the little things needed to win.

Option A pretty much defeats the purpose of your argument because it still requires LSU to beat Bama.
Option B is possible, but that's a very specific and narrow path to the championship that you can't count on.
Option C is almost unheard of and hasn't happened since 2010.

OP is right in that yes there is a tiny, microscopic chance LSU can win a championship without beating Bama. But the odds of it happening are even less than the odds of us just beating them and being done with it.

The OP in his title said we don't have to beat Bama to be considered "a playoff contending team." He is absolutely correct. If we go 11-1 with our only loss being a close one to Bama, we are more than likely going to the playoffs. Anything can happen at that point. That should be our focus.

Nothing I said in my post contradicts this.

While I would like to go undefeated, I don't care what our record is if we win the national championship. Conversely, if we beat Bama but lost 3 other games and went to a minor bowl, that's small consolation to me.

Honestly, a regular season loss to Bama barely impacts our chances. It's when our players let the loss affect their performance the rest of the year that has severely impacted our chances.

Fair enough. We don't need to beat them to be considered a playoff team. We do if we want to WIN the playoff. Hoping someone takes them out in the other game is the only way to avoid it, and I don't like those odds.

It's not impossible to beat Alabama. Especially for LSU. No one plays us tougher as consistently as they do. Not even Auburn. Sure, you can have an 11-1 record and get in but I think one of the things LSU should do is focus on being better than Bama. If they do that, their chances improve for a national title or at least a deep run if we don't get in for some reason. UGA focused on beating Florida. Of course, they failed at that but UGA is not LSU. If I was CEO, I think it would be a good thing to out-recruit, out-scheme and out-play the best team in the conference/division. No shame in that.

Like it or not, with the current setup, LSU has to beat Bama twice to win a NC.
