I remember being happy if we were just ranked, Top 10
I'm an older fart than you and the 50's and 60's weren't all that bad. Dietzel, starting with the 58 National champ went 11-0, 9-2.5-4-1(remember when you could have a tie?)) and 10-1. So ranked four out of those five. Charlie Mac coached until 1979 and had us ranked 9 times with a high of number 7 twice and one number 8.

So it wasn't until the 80's that we started to slide. Stovall only got one ranked year out of his five. Arnsbarger was a breath of fresh air and had a ranked team all three of his years. I think I cried when he left. Mike Archer came in like a lion with two ranked teams but then went out like a lamb with two pretty bad losing seasons.

Then there was the 90's and the real suffering started with Curley Hallman and his four losing seasons in a row which included a 2-9. Dinardo came in and righted the ship for a while with 2 under performing ranked teams until he fell off the turnip truck and was fired mid season.

The 2000's are the golden years with Nick winning his national with a couple of other ranked years in his five. Les came in and in his 11 years had us ranked all but two years and won another natty. This was with some of the best talent in all of college football and perhaps he could have had another championship or two if he had an offense and could beat Saban.

Coach O had ranked teams 4 out of 6 years and the championship in 2017. Kelly has had ranked teams both of his two years here. So spoiled? Maybe but not like Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and a few more. It is perhaps of note that Kelly's current goal of not losing more than 3 games to show consistency was met in four out of Les's last five years before being fired. So I think Kelly is going to have show some improvement in the next few years and not consistency.

As all of us on the Rant know, every year should be a National Championship with no excuses accepted.

You make it sound like LSU is Mississippi St and should just be happy for whatever crumbs you may get.

You're fricking LSU. You're supposed to be ELITE.

Is complaining and whining about fans at the top of that list?

Pretty close. Not just on this board, but also in real life conversations. It could very well be the case among all successful teams’ fans, but the number of absolutely ignorant people who speak on all things LSU football as if they’re the ultimate authority is sadly hilarious.

The problem is we have football ignorant fans that think we could go on some bama type run. What they don't understand is the football coach at Bama never gets told no. At the end of the miles era Bama's recruiting budget was 8 times what lsu's was.

2 of these is not like the other. I'd take lsu's last 20 years over every program not named bama. Georgia just won their first title in 40 years. Oklahoma hasnt won a title since 2000. I don't put winning the sec east or big 12 as some great achievement.

Come on brother. He took over a bad program. We had one player drafted in the first 3 rds last year and won't have defensive player drafted in the 1st 3 rds this year either. Kelly didn't take over the same type of program Miles and O did. I actually think Saban's first team had more talent than Kelly's 1st team.

So what, $10M should equal a national championship every year.

Enjoy this run, maybe. There’s no guarantee that it continues.

Go chat with some Nebraska and USCw fans.

Fan Expectations should always be sky high.

Its what keeps a program elite.

Two things can be true. LSU does have a spoiled fan base but expectations should also always be high. Nobody who is ultra successful in any endeavor got there by resting on their laurels.

It’s dumb that people say BK can’t get it done because lsu is 9-3. You aren’t going to win a natty every year. Anyone who expects that won’t be happy, however, it’s okay to be pissed when a program isn’t competing at 100% of its capability

Not for us old Farts. Like Orgeron, three years and you are out. We can't wait.

So you think we have the second best program in the country in the last 20 years next to Alabama? Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan have been more consistent. Is it only national championships that matter?

Yes. In 40 years no one will remember those seasons. Only nasties stand the test of time.

LSU has been to four NC games in the last 20 years. Only Bama has been to more. I don’t count Clemson because they just started getting good within the last ten years.
