Not necessarily terrible, but I want my offense to see the field more than 50 plays a game

When you offense is rated 112th, doesn't matter how good you D is, they're not going to be on the field very long, because they stink.

Its simple - he's telling Miles to be in a position to represent the West in Atlanta at the end of the season and you will have a good shot at the BCS Title Game or a BCS Bowl. 8 or 9 wins not punch your ticket for Atlanta unless its for the Chick Filet Bowl.

The sentence that did not make the final version was - "I told that idiot to can Crowton, but he disobeyed me. We are going to claim insubordination and cause at the end of 2010 and have a mediator negotiate the final buyout."

The fact that Alleva feels the need to give Les a vote of confindence is an admission that all is not well.

Why else would one be neccassary?

The vote of confidence is a sign all is not well. Don't think anyone, outside a few rainbow and unicorn followers here on this board thought different. Just verifies what most of us knew. Les knows he is getting close to the hotseat without changes.

And to think he even left an e-mail address- Good Grief!! Just one night of the rantards making neagative comments will probably make him wish he never game to LSU...

Isn't this the same freakin rhetoric we heard after 8-5 last year??? It's hard for the head coach to change anything for the better when he doesn't have a clue what he is doing wrong or how to fix it.

Les said his focus will be primarily the running game which is where it should be. That is the glaring area of need on offense. A team won a NC with 58 yards passing. He's on the right track, but with unproven RBs and still no FB he's going to need the players to step up as well as the offensive line to gel and begin moving defenders off the ball. It became apparent to me the reason we did not run much is because they knew we did not have a good fullback and apparently there was an issue with Scott filling the position effectively, because he hardly did so. They will likely spend a great deal of time trying to develop the fullback position because it is key to what they want to do in the running game.

So then you believe that the same people that brought us this year's nonsense have a plan in place to run the ball effectively? With the same o-line coach and OC as this year? That's exactly what I said: do the same thing as last year only try not to suck as much. We're supposed to fix those problems by changing the drills in spring practice? You've got a lot more faith in this crew than I do if you believe that.

ADs routinely issue scathing letters about its football program to the fans.

This equates to "scathing" in your mind:

"let's celebrate the fact that LSU football is thriving"

Seems like reasonable statement from the AD. He hit the highs, the lows, the in betweens and ended with "LSU football is thriving".

He doesn't seem to see only in black or white and I like that fact.

I disagree, I think if Miles wins the SEC next year, he will gain back alot of support. He BETTER at least get there next year are he will be GONE. Just my opinion.

Alleva beginning to look and sound like Joe Dean. Only Joe Dean could find a silver lining in an Offense ranked 112th without a sacrificial lamb such as Crowton. Unlike Dean, the Alum support is not there for Alleva. Alleva is obviously not strong enough or have enough power to do anything other than support Miles. He just placed his career on the Miles bandwagon.

Next time we need a coach, spend $2 million a year for a new President at LSU, and bring back Mark Emmert. Lombardi thinks he is bigger than the university, Emmert knows how to make the University complete in all phases. This is all about raising money, something that is losing momemtum at LSU since Lombardi took over, and the excuse of the economy is just that an excuse. Forget Miles, the problem is bigger than Miles. Bring back Emmert and LSU will be a winner setting the bar!

Looks to me that he is feeling some serious heat. 2010 will make or break he and Miles.

It is showtime boys ! Next September is going to be fun. Either show up and put up, or get the fu*k out of town. This is going to be very very interesting for Mr. Les Miles and choking Crowton. Let the fun begin !

I'm very surprised that he posted that message. It seems sort of amateurish to me. If the point is to send a message to Miles, he can do that far more explicitly in person, and in private. If the point is to tell the fans that the administration has high expectations for football, there is a way to do it far more generically than he did. There is no way I would have written something like that. Nothing good can come of publicly shaming the coaches. Either he is your man and you support him 100%, or he's not and you move on. This public spanking is ill-advised.

It was a very specifically worded message. While it did try to buck up Miles, the way I read it, it was also a warning to him. And that's good.

Miles knows he's got another year to fix this and deliver or GTFO. This ain't your grandpa's LSU. We aren't accepting mediocre anymore and Alleva knows that Miles will only precede him by a small amount of time if they don't turn this around.

That said, you have to respect that these guys do know what they're talking about better than we do. They could be wrong of course, but the odds are in their favor vs the fan base. Miles needed the semi spanking just so there was no doubt and hopefully he could placate the fans and TAF ever so slightly that he's not just ignoring us. There's more happening than we will ever be aware of. And anybody that thinks that after this season those coaches haven't grasped the gravity of their positions is just deluding themselves. You come to work for LSU these days you know up front you're risking your career if you don't perform because you really can't place any blame on the recruits. We've got more than sufficient talent to take it all the way regularly.

I'm willing to not lose my mind between now and December so long as I see improvement. I disagree with them about keeping Crowton but what do I know? Maybe he'll get a fire shooting out his arse as a result of all the heat on it and suddenly realize he won't be saved by moving to another program before the depth of his total failure is revealed. We shall see.

I for one am not depressed by this. They've got one more year to fix it to me. After that, I'll be right there with the negatigers.

Till then,

AD's do not write letters like these, with this tone, unless they are doing two things:

(1) Telling the fan-base that they have been heard.

(2) Telling the coach you have a clear requirement to do a particular thing.

In this case Alleva's letter makes it clear:
quote:

I want to make it clear that LSU is committed to having a football program that regularly plays for championships.

He then spends two paragraphs defending Miles. Now if you really think your coach is doing a slam-dunk job, you don't spend two paragraphs defending him. You say "Coach Miles did a great job." Alleva has now had to put himself on the line, so it is now personal with Alleva. If it is personal with Alleva, you can bet Alleva has made it clear to Les.

Get to the SEC Championship game.

So how long does Les have to get there? One year for sure, maybe two, but no more than two.

This is called "spin".

Exactly. Hate to break it to you Ranters out there, but Alleva's letter is not a response to (nor was it prompted by) the general discontent of LSU's message board fan base.

The primary targets are the alums, donors, season-ticket holders & TAF folks. And the goal is to continue to RAISE MONEY. Not saying LSU doesn't know the vast cadre of experts here that are pissed about the football team's past two seasons, but that's not the audience to which they're appealing. I had the displeasure of having to write dozens of these letters for administrators and coaches at three colleges, and if you think this was boring and blew hard, most of mine were worse. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
