I would have turned down going to LSU for 1.2 mil. And it would have been a very easy decision to make

I hope the kid overcomes the ridiculas odds and makes it to the big leagues.Regardless of where your drafted or how much money you get, only 1-3% of these kids ever sniff the bigs.So I think he did the right thing by taking the money. That's the only guarantee in this whole deal.

He will be chartering his own flight to the World Series next year to see LSU, not hitching a ride and bunking up!

Sure you do. It happens plenty in the MLB draft.

fab4lsu is also leaving out the cuts that would go to income taxes and agent fees assuming he had representation. I love LSU, but if I were Z I would have taken the money, too.

Anybody that criticizes this kid's decision is a moron. Too many things could have happened to him at LSU. He could have gotten hurt or performed poorly and saw his stock drop. The chances that he could improve his stock was almost nothing. Now the money is in the bank and he starts his career at least 3 years earlier which means he becomes eligible for arbitration and free agency 3 years earlier.

Though $1.2 mil can be "life-changing" at 17, I don't think of it as "being financially set". He will be surprised how fast he can go thru 1.2 mil (house, car, women etc.) Long term earnings are more significant than the signing bonus. That much or more would have been there the next time he was drafted if he was all that and stayed healthy. So go to LSU and buy insurance for your arm!!

First, I doubt anyone on this board was ever offered 1.2 million as a signing bonus for their first job out of high school, so we really have no perspective from which to judge the kid. Regardless, anyone criticizing a 17 year old kid for taking that kind of money instead of going to college is ABSOLUTELY NUTS.

Second, there is no gauranty that "that much or more money" would have been waiting for ZVR 3 years from now. Von Rosenberg GOT FIRST ROUND MONEY THIS YEAR, in spite of not being drafted until the 6th round (which shows you how desperate the Pirates were to beat out LSU for his services). I don't know how much more he could improve his position beyond first round money already (at best, low first round to high first round). By comparison, none of the pitchers who helped LSU win a College World Series this year who were drafted got anywhere close to the kind of money this kid is getting straight out of high school. Coleman was the highest, going in the 5th round, and he only signed for $100,000 bonus. And that's after 3 years of college and winning a College World Series!!

Von Rosenberg doesn't need to prove himself anymore than he already has, he just signed for FIRST ROUND MONEY.

2009 Signing Bonuses

Third, and most importantly, not only does he collect the 1.2 million signing bonus NOW (rather than some unknown number 3 years from now), but he's getting a 3 year head start on making it to "The Show." And likewise, a 3 year head start on reaching those "long term earnings." College would not likely increase that earning potential, but only put it off an additional 3 years. In fact, while other kids will be toiling away in college, Von Rosenberg will be paying his dues and developing in the minors. If he's as good as the Pirates obviously believe, he could very easily be pitching in the Majors 3 years from now. Either way, he'll be 3 years closer to that goal and a big contract.

And last but not least, I can only hope my boys get the opportunity to make such a decision!! (that's my oldest son in the sig pic, and he's very much hoping to be recruited by LSU)

GEAUX TIGERS!! We'll be fine.
