But the olympics is about gold medals

Not necessarily. It's about viewership now. Ever since they lost that ski jumper (whatever her name was) they do not have a big name athlete to follow (eg. Michael Phelps). I guess Lolo is the next best thing.

It seems odd that her being an olympic hurdler would qualify her for bobsled. Unless she's actually been practicing at it.

The NFL is so easy. Antonio Gates didn't play football in college and suddenly he's a Pro Bowl TE? What a joke.

Yes, all you have to be is an Olympic caliber sprinter and you can push a bobsled. Pretty simple.

You do not need Olympic speed. Look at all the people competing in bobsled, how many are world class sprinters? Just be fast.

The problem is lifetime bobsledders seem to believe that pushing a sled is come sort of rare skill that takes decades to learn. Dude, Lolo Jones took it up four months ago and she's Olympics ready. Get over yourselves, bobsled elitists.

Driving the bobsled is one thing. Pushing it is a whole other thing. You have to realize that even if you are a top bobsled pusher, you can probably be replaced by about 10,000 other athletes on short notice.

If you want to be an irreplaceable, special athlete immune to the politics of sport, it's never going to happen. Chances are the person Lolo is replacing got that spot due to favoritism of some sort.

For anyone who thinks bobsledding is so simple with only speed from the pushers required are not very informed. I am in no way a bobsled expert, but did have a one day training experience at an executive team building retreat at the USA Olympic training center in Park City, Utah. I learned you need 4 crucial skills...
1. Strength - that initial 10 yd burst pushing that sled is all about physical lower body leverage.
2. Speed - the next 10 yds of speed can make a huge difference in 10ths of seconds to being world class
3. Team synchronization - believe me when I tell you the scariest part is the "jump" of an athletic large body into a minuscule space all together like sardines jumping into a can without losing it...scary as hell actually...it take tons of coordination and teamwork.
4. Core muscle control - once in, the Gs you are facing are flicking unreal. Not like you are then just along for a fun ride. You have to be incredibly synchronized and controlled with very firm body leans to optimize speed through turns. I wasn't when I did it...I was like a bobble head doll slamming into the side of the bobsled on every turn with a tremendous headache afterwards. Thank God for the helmet or I may have endured a severe concussion...not kidding!

The experience left a very strong impression on just how demanding this sport is that requires great teamwork synchronization, strength, speed and core muscle control. All things I am sure Ms Jones has proven in spades. It was frankly very traumatic physical and mental experience, and not taking a fun roller coaster ride on steroids.

Also remember a similar Olympic experience where Hershel Walker transitioned from his sprinter and football experience as a pusher on the Men's team that ultimately won an Olympic medal if I recall correctly back in the 1990s. The Olympic committee and Hershel also caught lots of criticism when selected back then as well.

All makes for a great story leading into the Olympic Games. I for one wish Ms Jones and the entire bobsled team the very best is success. Geaux for the Gold! And make us Tigers proud!

All this is showing is that it really doesnt take much skill to be a bobsledder. All these track people have never even seen a bobsled can do it better than the people who have been doing it for years. It must be mainly about speed and not much else.
