And yet Tom Landry was the most popular coach during his era. Tony Dungy ended up penning a highly successful book (#1 on NYT Best Seller list) called Quiet Strength based on that style.

"Leadership is a matter of having people look at you and gain confidence, seeing how you react. If you're in control, they're in control." ---Tom Landry

I'm not saying I would like to see Les lose his composure, just maybe say SOMETHING of relevance when interviewed and the team's struggling...

"Coach, what's your take on why you're struggling in the red zone to put points on the board after long drives down the field?"

"The going gets tough, you get tougher."

"So coach, what would you like to see your team do differently in the second half to find more success?"

"I like the fire in their belly"

"Coach, what's your opinion on the guy jumping from the edge of space tomorrow?"

"I like teddy bears. They make me feel all fuzzy inside."

Classic Spurrier:

LINK

USC coach Steve Spurrier said he kept asking quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus, about Shaw, 'Did he get hit in the head somewhere?” The reason, Spurrier said later: “Because some of his decision making was a little off.”

Who does? Seriously. Which coach gives much more than platitudes when his team is or is not struggling?

I am very proud of the team and enjoyed a great win, but I just have to vent...

It really bugs me that Miles wears a hat and a windbreaker. I mean, I know he has a pretty good record and all, but can't we get a coach who wears a sweater vest or something? Maybe it's just me, but I just feel if we pay a coach as much as we pay CLM, he should wear a sweater vest, and maybe he do a sort of Irish Jig on the sidelines with every first down. If we win that's cool too, I just feel a "want" to be entertained and included in the process of the game. Maybe we should start a quiet search for a coach that will "dance".

Nobody expects definitive game plans, but Les has a well deserved rep for this stuff, and we all know it. It's a part of why people make fun of him. It's folksy and kind of silly.

I'm guessing that you are too old to remember the "Old Professor".

If fans were fans for such high browed intellectualism, competitive chess would dwarf college football.

It's a game of passion, and always will be. Sometimes I guess, you just want to see that your coach feels the same frustration that you do and he's human as well.

Every sport/game is one of passion for those who play it at a high level be it chess , tennis, boxing or football.

It is ok to condone throwing tantrums and shouting at times but it is downright illogical and silly to look down on someone who is in control of his emotions and looks dispassionately throughout the game.

If anything it shows that you are leading the way by example to your players, that you can have passion and play the game but no point in losing your head due to a mistake or penalty.

But to each his own.

Ummm actually Miles and Spurrier are both very candid and both give great interviews. The correct correlation would be Spurrier/MIles and Saban who has zero personality.

I agree. On those occasions when Miles seems evasive, he's probably being honest because there's no real answer to the dumb question being asked.

What's really "kind of silly" is talking up a SS who hasn't had a college football team of note in a decade till maybe this yr and he still is coming up 2nd best to LM who has been having teams of note consistently for almost a decade.

I agree with this. This "I've got a secret up my sleeve and I'm not going to tell you what it is" is amateurish and makes fans feel like they are being talked down to.

And acting like you deserve to know everything the coach could possibly tell you makes you sound like an entitled bitch.

CLM is a mid Westerner & a former offensive lineman & he reflects the personalty of both, laid back & easy going off the field. Spurrier is a former QB, and most QB's are brash & cocky, in his case, arrogant, and this reflects his personalty as a coach. Both styles win, much like you can win with a Dean Smith approach or a Bobby Knight approach.

Any players ever comment on the Les we don't get to see? I've wondered if some of his interviews are an act, I just figure he's a lot more intelligible with the team than with the press.

Miles is very much like a Dale Brown coach. Good recruiter and motivator. Not so good managing things or X's and O's.

He gets results so......

Really? So you want someone telling you to change the way you talk the way you act?

I hate the way northerners talk, but i have no right to tell them to speak differently.

This is the shite i hate. Miles is a great coach, but people are blinded by hate just because they dont like the way he talks. News flash, people in LA talk funny to everyone else in the country.

I love how people make fun of muschamp, spurrier, saban and kelly for losing it on the sidelines, yet they want miles to do the same. I saw people posting, why doesnt he rip into players? Well if you watched the fricking games he does lay into players. Jalen mills, seth fruge, doesnt ring a bell? Watch the games.
