I (like as well as many of my friends) was accepted to Tulane but chose LSU because I wanted great academic programs (landscape architecture- #1 ranked program in the US) AND strong athletics. Can you say that?
So I guess you are an athlete, otherwise you should be looking for the better education. In landscaping LSU is tops, I won't argue that. And if they held the athletes to the general student entrance requirements, do you think you'd be a top 20 type team regularly? The question is not intended as a flame, I'd really like to hear what the Tigers think about that.

Another factor in Toolame's decline into FB irrelevancy was the introduction of the Saints. Plenty of people attended their games until '67 b/c there was no other team in N.O. Gen X members felt no attachment to Toolame as New Orleans' team" since the city had an NFL team all of their lives. The same situation happened to the college teams in Dallas & Houston when pro teams moved there in the 60s. Eventually, their pitiful attendance led to UT & TAMU leaving the SWC instead of propping up Rice, UH, SMU & TCU.

Good point. Georgia Tech was also hurt by the Falcons for many years. They've rebounded to some degree.

That was a tradition they started before the Saints.

quote:I agree. I remember the rivalry well. Here's my rivalry story.
I think that current fans who are of the mind set that they would not even want a rivalry with Tulane would feel and think differently if they had experienced the games when it was truly a passionate rivalry.
When I was a little kid, I remember my dad (a really dedicated LSU fan) taking my sister and me to an LSU game at Tulane Stadium. We sat in the cheap seat-bleachers up near the top row. He bought us green pom-poms (for Tulane) then told us that Tulane's mascot was the Green Weenies. We ran up and down the aisle yelling "Go Green Weenies!" the whole game.

I remember that being part of the end of Mike Miley. The team had been undefeated, then dropped to Alabama, then Tulane. It would also lose to Penn St in the Orange Bowl. Thereafter, Miley was reportedly very down on himself and ultimately decided to sign a baseball contract instead of coming back to LSU for his senior year. Tragically, Mike would die a few years later in an auto accident.

Once Tulane, as a University, started catering to the out of state student, the fan base of Tulane got watered down. You have very few oos students who stay in New Orleans after they graduate. This definitley contributed to the downfall of the Wave.

Tulane really needs to buy some property and rebuild their stadium. I am sure they have a few rich alums who would help out. While I know the program has not done that great over the last several decades, the campus stadium did give things more character. It just sets a certain atmosphere for a college game to be on campus. Hell, even D-III Louisiana College is rebuilding their stadium. They actually got the field put down a week ago and had their first game on campus in 40 years. They had to use temporary bleachers and lawn chairs, but they did it. Even won the damn thing.
Tulane does deserve some credit from us in that they were the ones who encouraged LSU to take up football over 100 years ago. They need to get some property and find a way to rebuild their stadium.

and 4 those 2B arse holes-lol
no I was not alive then, but
now, this is a rivalry.
the 1938 game where there was a fight and according to LSU 1893-1993 History by Finney, there were around 15,000 people fighting at one time.
...and you must read the story about the blonde cheerleader..p 150
