People forget we signed Watkins at the last minute out of LSU-E only after the draft that year took who we thought was going to be one of our outfield starters

and that's another point i wanted to add .. watkins shouldn't really even be on this team ... he was a band aid after the draft massacre of '09 ... i just remember thinking for the first two months of the 2010 season, "Jesus, does this guy just not see the ball out there off of the bat ?? what is his fricking problem !! no way that ball even falls in front of ryan schempf !!"

that's what i don't get .. i could see 11 pages if he told austin nola or tyler hanover goodbye .. but come on .. trey watkins ?? who gives a frick .. and LOL at all the people pissing and moaning about letting him go before the draft .. yeah .. many a major league team out there is looking for a .218 lead off man with a .301 OBP that has a 50-50 shot of catching a fly ball with a coaches pitch arm ..

this season he was hitting in the low .200s as a freaking lead off hitter and was still nothing spectacular in the outfield

But Rag, average doesn't matter he had a .400 OBP and finished with .351. Talent I tell you, talent.

Do not forget that we need to make room for other players coming in. Ware is most likely done as a baseball player too. He had plenty of chances and look mediocre at best. His future is football.

So that is 5 spots opened (Watkins, Ware, Mahtook, Alsup, Bradshaw) with the possibility for another 4 open spots following the draft(Nola, Ott, Jones, Hanover).

It sounds like he got Justin-Vincent syndrome from people I've talked to.

Didn't work hard enough coming back from his injury, or have the work ethic to improve to CWS caliber. Tough to lose a speedy guy, but natural talent can only get you so far...

I'm not buying any of that. Ware possibly could have been our starting left fielder if he didn't have to miss 3 SEC weekends to practice football. Chad Jones was a junior before he contributed to the LSU baseball team.

And he will continue to miss those three weeks each season. Also, Jones was a pitcher not a OF

I would have given him his walking papers about 20 games into the season.

Dude is 5'4" and tried to hit a homerun every at bat as a leadoff hitter. He had the worse at bats of any starter on the team.

I wish him the best at what ever he does just glad he is not at LSU anymore.

Dont you mean finished as a reliever?

It seems you forgot he started in the outfield.

I mean, I get it the kid had a bad year. BUT you don't see coaches just dropping players for having a bad year too often....there must be more to this story

No, I'm arguing you're a fricking idiot from the getgo. After the murderer's row we had to start the season and the guy capped out at a .253/.400 you really thought he could maintain that?

He occasionally played in the outfield in late innings at the beginning of the season. I don't recall that he ever "started" in the outfield unless it was a midweek game against Directional State University.

I'll admit, I was pretty disappointed when I heard this news, and I clearly was not a big Watkins fan. I was disappointed because he could have been a very good leadoff man, he has the speed, patience, and eye...he just can't hit real well and it hasn't clicked since his injury last year.

But, I would have preferred he stayed on as a bench player, he would have been useful in that role.

I agree...I had hoped that Trey could at least be a Buzzy Haydel or Nick Pontiff next year.

That guy played every position, even pitcher. Not a standout but pretty damn versatile.

I'd rather CM to cut a guy like Didier or somebody else, I mean Trey was a starter which means he beat out some people for playing time. Why not cut them?

That's a big fricking mistake.

What? Batting .225?

Surely, I presume he could help the team as a bench player.

Like the article said, Watkins was tried as a DH also, and that didn't exactly get his average up either. The point is, if Mainieri doesn't win, he doesn't stay, so can you blame him for doing whatever possible to get this team winning again? As a fan, if we come back next year and make it to Omaha, are you really going to remember Watkins?? Remember, this is not the first time PM had house cleaning, he did the same thing after he replaced Smoke, and the results were a success, we won in Omaha. For whatever reason, the ship has a hole in it, and something needs to be done- if players have to go, so be it...
