My son is on TOPS. Because of the Covid 19-necessary computer classes, LSU allowed the classes to be pass/fail. He chose take some of his classes Pass/fail. Does anyone know if these late-declared P/F classes count toward the required 24 hours for TOPS?

I would be surprised if they didn't count them

I think they count as classes but are excluded from GPA calculation.

But as of right now TOPS won't have any money next year.

The course hours count, the issue is GPA with pass/fail. Be careful taking pass/fail is your GPA is close to the minimum for retention

Pass/no credit wouldn’t affect TOPS status as long as you pass, since students still receive credit for taking the course. It just won’t affect their GPA at all

I doubt the state will have the money to fund tops for much longer. Enjoy it now

Pass will count as hours passed. Does not count toward GPA.
Fail will not count as hours passed. will be an F.

So what constitutes Pass/Fail? Is it just pass unless you get an F? Or is there a different cutoff?

And it doesn't sound like that'll change the GPA at all.

Like others said, TOPS will prob run out by the time your son is in his fall semester.

For post-secondary students, the proclamation suspends the continuing eligibility requirements by suspending continuous enrollment, academic year earned hours, and GPA requirements for the 2019-2020 academic year.
This applies to: 1) students who were enrolled full-time as of the 14th class day and who were enrolled as of the March 13th declaration of emergency, 2) students who were studying abroad and had to return home due to the COVID-19 outbreak where they were studying, and 3) students who were scheduled to be enrolled full-time in the spring quarter at Louisiana Tech University.
The order also suspends the deadline that requires a student to achieve a specified GPA to have his award reinstated after a suspension for not meeting the cumulative grade point average requirement.

should still count. The classes count as a credit. Taking P/F just means it has no effect on GPA

I told my son to man up and make good grades. However, you can apparently elect pass/fail after you find out your final grade, so why decide early? Unless he is already locked into a “C.”

Well, of course we all told them to make good grades. The ones he decided to pass/fail are B's, which hurt his GPA. He actually plans on re-taking the classes to hopefully get A's. All this info about P/F status does is tell him how many hours he needs to take in the summer.
