And has been picked to win the National Championship all 7 . . . and yet only managed it once (or twice, if you want to suck up to the "sportwriters" and their laughable poll). How many times has Richt been picked to win the Championship and failed to do so? Once? Bottom line, all "journalism" is about selling papers/pageviews/airtime/etc. And for the last several years, the best college-sports related avenue into the L.A. market has been to kiss Pete Carroll's arse. That is why he has gotten the most laughable kid's glove treatment of any coach in any sport in the last couple of decades, and until national audiences begin to respond well to bashing him, it will continue the exact same way. Just like Miles; right now, the national audience responds best to bashing him. As long as that is the case, they will make up any shite -- no matter how ludicrous or absurd -- to bash him.

This is journalism in the 21st century; take it or leave it.

Hey Sooner Hater-

Are you an expert? Send me all the books you have read. Maybe I can, somehow, eventually, be as smart as you.

How do you put any of these SEC coaches on this list. It's the SEC and there is no coach that is going to win every game that every freaking reporter thinks they are supposed to win. Especially this coming season in the SEC West. LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Arkansas are right now capable of beating eachother on any Saturday.

If anything Nutt is underrated. The only knock I would have on him is that he did not win more with McFadden and Jones. But he really didn't have a quarterback to go with that. Other than that he seems to win a lot of big games.

There are no coaches in any conference that have to prepare their teams to play tougher opposition week in and week out.

They should have beaten us three years ago in Arkansas - but Nutt had Casey Dick trying to throw the ball in the 4th quarter when all he had to do was put McFadden at QB (which was killing us earlier in the game) and they would have won.

Not even close. They weren't picked to win it 2003 (yet still one the AP title), picked in 2004 (and won it), picked in 2005 (finished 2), not picked in 2006 (finished 4), picked to win it in 2007 (finished 2/3), not picked to win it in 2008 (finished 2/3).

So, USC has been picked to win it 3 times and he has two titles and a BCS NC loss.

I'm sorry to say that will never happen. As long as Saban is at Bama and Miles is at LSU, Miles will never escape the shadow of Saban thanks to Bama idiots who feel all future LSU success is due to Saban.

I agree it will not end. But I disagree on it being Bama's idiots. Miles isn't thier coach. It's LSU's idiots. Too many still carry the torch for their beloved Saban. Ignoring the fact that he's Bama's coach & trying to beat LSU.

Picked by who is the question? You? Sporting News? In all of those years, they were considered one of the favorites to win the title. This year is one of the first years where I haven't heard them mention USC in the NC discussion.

2002- Started: 20th Finished: 4th
2003- Started: 8th Finished: 2nd/1st
2004- Started: 1st Finished: 1st
2005- Started: 1st Finished: 2nd
2006- Started: 6th Finished: 4th
2007- Started: 1st Finished: 3rd
2008- Started: 3rd Finished: 3rd

So, actually, they've done better than what I said. They haven't finished out of the top FOUR in 7 straight years. Only two years did they finish worse than they were projected. They've finished better three times, and tied twice (one of which was a NC, can't really do better than 1st). 3 years out of 7 they've been picked to win the NC, less than half (not exactly every year) and in 2 years, they won it. Another, they came in 2nd. Wow, so overrated.

He's lost 43 SEC Games in 11 seasons. Averages 4 SEC losses per season. That's pathetic really.

Remember Mitch Mustain? Why did that situation occur along with the other "Star" players? Why didn't Nutt do a better job of recruiting QBs?

AP and coaches. There is a big difference between being in the discussion (which is testament to his coaching) and being the favorite.

He's considered one of the top two coaches in the country right now, and there's little evidence to dispute that.

I'm not saying he is overrated. But Les Miles being overrated is a joke. It's a horrible double standard. Les gets hammered for not winning the NC in '05-'07 in the SEC when USC is constantly loaded with superior talent in a shitty conference. I guess Top 5 finishes are good enough to get Caroll off the overrated list, but not Miles.

And contrary to this past year, alot of people thought Miles was overrated. So, don't bring up what happened this past year as evidence to Miles being overrated.

Here's what you're leaving out of these stats. The media was ready to annoint USC's 2005 team as one of the best of all time until, somehow, it failed to beat Texas in the BCS title game. In 2006 USC was almost an afterthought to play in another BCS title game until, somehow, it failed to beat 5-loss UCLA in its final regular season game. In 2007 USC was preseason no.1, but lost an eventual shot to play in the BCS title game because it dropped its third game of the season to what would turn out to be an 8-loss Stanford team.

With all the talent Pete Carroll has had at USC, it is telling that he's only got one BCS title. BCS title as in, you know, the championship that's won on the field.

What he said.

Between the talent level, media love and soft conference schedule, USC should be in the BCSNC game every year.

And don't even get me started on Charlie Weiss or Bob Stoops.

And once again, who's getting them? This isn't the pros, where the GM takes care of football operations, signs/drafts players, etc. This is college. Recruiting is 50% of the game.

In large part? Los Angeles! Snoop Dogg! Credit has to be given to him and his staff, but being the glamour team in one of the nations three biggest hotbeds for talent doesn't exactly hurt your efforts. Not blowing smoke because you're a Buckeye fan, but JT is a better recruiter than PC IMHO because he gets talent to move to Ohio.

Of course, and obviously USC's history. However, if you look at USC before he arrived, they weren't getting those guys. He still has to get it done, too. But you do make a good point. Even if you say he's naturally at a great place to recruit, though, not finishing out of the top 4 7 years in a row is ridiculous. No 9-3 seasons, or anything like that. That's amazing.

Well, we do get a lot from Ohio. It's a pretty good HS football state. I think we're in a good location, though. Columbus is a big city, so there's a lot to do. That helps on recruiting visits and to attract recruits. I mean, if you go to Gainsville, it's a college town, there isn't a whole lot outside UF. At OSU, you travel 2 miles down the interstate, you're downtown, with a good amount of stuff to do. Plus, already a huge campus. And awesome facilities/NFL success. But still, Tress is a great recruiter.
