the guy has done a amazing job at Harvard, he coached under Coach K, and won the NIT at Mich. does anyone think he can come in and change the program?
Why doesn't LSU do something with Shaq and have him on BBall staff?

You want Shaq to coach the team?

Shaq's only been retired one year and seems to have other interests than coaching.

He was a flop at Seton Hall and Michigan. People drool over coaches who learned under Krzyzewski when most of them are failures as coaches.

Amaker failed when put on the big stage. No one cares about winning the NIT. What does Shaq have to do with Amaker? I doubt he would want to become an assistant coach.

you know Shaq has considerably more NBA money to fall back on than Amaker does?

Coaching a college basketball team isn't a part time job.

In another thread I jokingly answered Shaq when someone asked who LSU would bring in.
But then I got to thinking about it. The main question is can we afford him? IMO I don't think Shaq would turn down what TJ is making. We shouldn't ask him to sign on for 5 years or anything. I think if we offered him a shorter contract, he'd think 'why not?'.
The big guy doesn't like losing, and he's big enough to have his team scared to lose.
He's obviously still outgoing enough to consider a project like coaching a college team.
It'd bring press to LSU basketball and would put some asses in the seats.
Being an ex-player doesn't mean you know how to coach, but I think Shaq is coaching material, and I think his personality/experience would hit home and play well with younger players

i would not say he was a failure at michigan and seton hall. he was above the average. go look up his records online. i can tell you from coaching it takes years on how to become sucessful in basketball. he might not have had the best talent. you can't win the kentuck derby with a mule. maybe he has figured out a system that works for him now. he is still young in coaching age. you do know that john wooden lost his first 5 years at ucla and coach k at duke the same thing. they both have said by todays standards that they would have been fired now days. sometimes it takes time in the field of coaching to perfect your system and how to deal with things. be patient with trent. he's on the right track.

He had one NCAA tourney team in ten years at Seton Hall and Michigan and sub .500 conference record at both places. He had major talent at Seton Hall (Sammy Dalembert, Shaheen Holloway, Andre Barrett, Darius Lane, and Eddie Griffin)but the team fell apart because the players were headcases most notably Eddie Griffin.

Shaq, although a great recruiting tool, would be a terrible coach. He has no experience whatsoever in coaching, plus I dont think the guy has the brains to develop solid Xs & Os. But dont get me wrong, I fricking love the Shaqtus.

Idk how much of an X's and O's kind of person shaq is but he would be one hell of a recruiter. You need the best players to compete with a team like Kentucky.

There is no way, no way, that Amaker would leave Harvard to go to LSU. That is a stepping stone to a more prominent basketball program. Probably Duke, he hopes. He may not know where LSU is.

so that doesn't anwser my question. so what if duke would have fired coach k. on another note. go look up bear bryants record and the end of the 60's and early 70's. he lost 6 straight bowl games. he would be fired for that today. we are to impatient with coaches today. period. have you ever coached anything? coaching is not just about x and o's. everybody can learn x and o's. 90 percent is about the delivery of communication on the information. sometimes that takes years to learn. that's why some coaches get much better in there later years. i bet even in your field of work the same can be said.

A) What makes you think Shaq wants to be on the staff?

B) In exactly what capacity would you have him on the staff?

relatively young guy who can sell the product plus play an attractive style of ball. trent's thing is 'play defense and rebound'. we've been mediocre defensively and pretty bad at rebounding so yeah.

i love randy bennett but he may have even fewer ties to the south than trent did when he came here.

I don't want Shaq as coach. Number one he doesn't even remotely want the job and number two I don't think he has the personality for it. Great on the PR side but low on the hard work and take it seriously side.

So can we take advantage of the PR side without having him on the coaching staff? Could he make a commercial for us promoting LSU basketball that LSU could buy time for on the major networks? Would that be a violation of NCAA rules? State rules?

All the young recruits would see it and it would make them think of LSU as a viable option.

Tommy Amaker bball coach at Harvard,

If it comes down to changing coaches a year or two down the road I think the thing to keep in mind is not necessarilly who we want but who we can realistically get and who is a good fit.

I think Trent's unfamiliarity with the region and style of play here has hurt him as much as anything, so that's one thing to keep in mind.

And not everyone we might want, wants to come here.

Take Anthony Grant for example, who quickly told us thanks but no thanks from what I heard.

My bro-in-law thinks we should get the guy from Butler, but would he come here over the many other schools that might want him? Would Amaker?
