Man, I still think one of the biggest what if's in basketball history is what if the Hawks were allowed to keep Dr. J.

Pairing one of the best players of the 70s and 80s with Pistol Pete would've been one of the most exciting teams if not the most exciting team of all-time.

He would’ve made his currently unbreakable scoring records more unbreakable.

This has been discussed a lot over the years. I was at LSU the same time that Pete was.

Painting a three-point line on the court in those days would have been tantamount to a dare for Maravich. As a result, Pete would have been taking *most* of his shots from behind the three-point arc, and consequently would have averaged over 50 points a game.

He also would have doubled his assists total, because teams would have been forced to extend their defense and he would have fed Sanders, Newton, et al, all game long.

(and we still would have lost to Kentucky and had to play in the NIT. Sigh.)

I never saw him play, but I watched his Homework Basketball VHS tape over and over.

RIP Pistol

What is even more remarkable is that he played with congenital heart disease his whole career but didn't have a heart attack until he was playing a relaxed pickup game after he retired.

Obscure Maravich Fact:::

Pistol Pete was born in Aliquippa PA. His dad Press coached basketball at Aliquippa HS. One of his players was Mike Ditka…

Lots of Eastern Europeans in that area.

love Shaq, but as a college player he wouldn't have gotten a scholarship at all if it weren't for his size, he got better over time, Maravich was the man when he walked on any basketball court

Saw him when I was a little boy. He was filling up his maroon Porsche near David Drive. My sister got his autograph for me. Wish I still had it.

I wonder what happened to that Porsche. Somebody still owns it and probably doesn’t know it was Pete’s.
