If you set up on the outside of the box you can still have a chance to hit a pitch on the inside of the plate to the opposite field because you've created space and this enables you a much better chance at advancing at least your lead runner. Just a little cat and mouse, something to try on your first pitch possibly second and then they'll most likely start working the outside of the plate if you stay there.

This is little league stuff. If a college hitter backs away from the plate in the box, the pitcher and catcher will see that easy and paint the outside black where the bat wouldn’t even reach. At that level, guys know exactly where they are putting both feet in the box, regardless of situation. Some may spread out with 2 strikes, but that’s about it.

Don't baseball analytics say it is a bad idea?

Yes. Outs are more important than bases. That’s why people don’t steal nearly as much anymore. The extra base is not worth the risk of the out.

Now, obviously, there are exceptions and you can’t go by analytics every time. Down by 1 with 2 outs late in a game with a pitcher slow to the plate and a great base stealer on 1st? Of course you take the chance there to get the tying run in scoring position. But all things being equal, out > base.

Hey, I said only 1, possibly 2 pitches and they would work outside, I know this. With no hitting last night, they could have tried anything and it wouldn't have been any worse.
