I just want to make one post about Kevin Steele and be done with it. I do not think that Les, who is on thin ice of sorts, would hire a guy he thinks is going to fail. I expect Steele to snag a player or two late and I expect things will get a lot more positive about his hire after that and into the Spring. We will all know by mid October what just happened and whether he was a good hire or not. I choose to be optimistic, because humility tells me I do not have all the facts and this is above my pay grade anyhow. For all we know, it could turn out to be a great hire, a lousy hire, and anything in between. Until I see otherwise, I'll just say it's a great hire, be optimistic, and hope it works out. Go Coach Steele and Geaux Tigers!

I'm no Miles hater.

However, on paper, this is a poor hire. That doesn't mean Steele is doomed for failure. But, let's not pretend that it looks good.

Furthermore, the search itself was performed poorly. At a time when the fan base was reeling a bit (Chavis leaving, loss in bowl game, etc.), the program could have used a strong voice indicating a quality hire would be made. Instead there was zero communication with the fan base. And predictably, people assumed the worst. One of the only pieces of info that surfaced during the search was of Steele as a candidate. The reaction from the fan base was strong against him. Those that were defending the process at the time weren't suggesting Steele would be a good hire...they were calming the masses that he wasn't a real candidate.

So, not only is it a bad hire on paper, it was made in the face of very specific opposition to Steele...and was an obvious underwhelming hire at a time when the program itself could have used a splash type of hire.

Miles is going to live and die by this hire. It may work out. We'll see.

But, if you think having the backing of fan base is important at all, this was a disaster.

Alleva made a statement saying he had confidence that a top coach would be hired. That's all you can expect during a coaching search.

When Steele proves he is worthy of support I'll consider it.

Alleva wasn't interviewing candidates and wasn't the guy making the hire.

That message needed to come from Miles.

This was a PR nightmare. Combine that with the poor hire on paper, and you have a fan base that is not behind the direction of the program.

You said there was zero communication. You were wrong. And when do head coaches make comments to the media during a coaching search? Almost never.

It is time to voice our opinions on a questionable hire.

What credentials do you have to declare this a questionable hire? Because you have an account on TD? Because you've played NCAA Football on the PS or Xbox? Because you've watched more college football than you can remember?

Get over yourself and let it play out.

Until he proves he is incompetent, can't get the job done, etc. I'll support him. Unlike some of the geniuses here I admit those at the top know a whole lot more about football than I do.

Miles needed to address it heading into the search. I didn't expect him to give daily reports.

But, PR is real and is valuable. This was a disaster. I realize you don't recognize this. This hire was assumed to be a disaster along the way because of the lack of PR regarding the search...and then Miles made a hire that looks bad on paper. Those 2 things together end with a fan base that is in the shape that this one is in.

Better start praying cause it's gonna take a miracle for this to work out.
Kevin Steele as LSU DC is more like a punishment from God, a chastisement if you wish. A means used by God to bring His people closer to Him.
People will lose interest in LSU football and start going to Church instead.
I hope I'm wrong, but the pieces are now in place with LSU's QBs and now a DC that has a history of poor play calling.
He should be the LB coach, not a play caller in any capacity.
The future will be bright, but there will be a 2 year period of the chastisement which has begun, then there will be a resurrection and Les Miles will be gone.

its pretty bad when people have to urge the fans to pray for the new assistant.

Usually we can look at the resume and see a star recruiter or a great motivator or a brilliant scheme guy.

prayer.

Darn.

Emotional reactions to a coaching hire don't mean anything. Steele's defenses will determine how this turns out, not the temporary PR situation. You don't make hires to appease the fans. You make the hire that you believe is the right one.

I totally agree with every word.

Let's give him a chance. I will join the OP in prayer, too. Let us all visualize and feel the wonderful successes that the new coach and the whole team have in the coming years.

I will join the OP in prayer, and affirm only the best for the team and the new coach. Amen.

None of this will matter if Harris starts and turns out to be no better than Jennings, or if Jennings starts. Our only hope for next year is Harris and a decent defense. Any other cenerio and we frick'd. Just from what I've read about Steele, I am pretty sure he will not cut it for LSU to succeed. Doom and gloom is upon us. Get ready to throw your beer at the TV next year.

do you throw the glass or just the beer in the can or glass?

I just bought a new TV. I yell at the TV.

I have read about people who shoot the TV with a shotgun.
It must feel great.

I watched the Bama game with two good friends and had to maintain decorum, but I doubt I will ever get over the call at the 1 foot line on the punt. Lord help me forgive that referee.

At least support the guy until something happens that warrants this meltdown.

I'm rooting for Steele 100%!
