lol

between AGon, Crawford, Lackey and Beckett, they will earn 70million combined next year.

That's more than about 10 MLB teams

their payroll is big because they PAY for whoever they want

wont even get into players like Dice K, JD Drew, or Mike Cameron that they attempted to sign to improve the team.

LOL at Lackey, but yea, they sign free agents. Just like every other big team in the MLB. I won't argue that they have a big payroll.

My point is they develop players. Pedroia, Youk, Ellsbury, Pap, Lester, Lowrey, ect..

Who have the yanks developed other than the big 4?

Huh? I listed quite a few players. Who have the yanks produced other than the big 4? They live and die off of the free agent signings. And the big 4 is about done. The Sox are in much better shape.

yeah and that list is next to nothing if you remove and dismiss 4 homegrown players like you did with the Yankees.

not to mention you cant even spell Lawrie. big fan i assume

anyway cano is home grown, as is hughes, Joba, and Gardner.

live and die? lol

no more than the Red Sox do.

the 2004 Red Sox WS Champs had basically no homegrown players

the best players on 07 champ team were free agent signees. All 5 of the starters were from elsewhere. Lester started a few games, that was it.

I drove out for the game myself. I was surprised with the number of people in the stands...I would have brought a wideangle lens if I knew the stands would be full.

guess it was cool a few years ago to show your hate of the Yankees by supporting Boston, but now the Red Sox have basically become the Yankees.

There is an infinite amount of truth to all of this.

funny you dont touch on the Red Sox last 2 WS teams and how they were top heavy with free agent signings.

the 04 team had no homegrown player in the everyday lineup or rotation

I have no logical reason to be a Red Sox fan, besides my dad was always a fan and he would watch the games with me when they were on tv. He was a fan because when he was a kid Sox games were the only ones he could get on the radio in Morgan City .

This is just the way baseball is now. There are a handfull of teams that will go out and spend money on players and those are the ones that will contend.

Yup, that 2004 starting rotation was just top-heavy with highly-paid free agents -- as in ONE.

Five guys started 157 of the 162 games that year.

Only Schilling was an expensive free agent signing (and he was originally signed by Boston and pitched his first 60 or so games in their minor league system).

They TRADED for Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe. A trade is equally available to all organizations.

And the other two starters, Wakefield and Arroyo, were released by their teams and picked up for little more than the major league minimum - something also available to any other team that year.

Ortiz is also an example of a very low-cost castoff that any team in baseball could have afforded to sign after the Twins gave up on him.

Not true. A trade is more difficult for smaller markets as players are less likely to want to play there and the money isnt around to keep trading for top talent. Boston fans are fricking morons to think they're not part of the problem of baseball.

This statement makes it clear that you have absolutely no concept of what a trade is vs. a free agent signing.

With very few exceptions, and those belonging only to those who had previously signed large contracts and can block trades to certain teams via no-trade clauses, , baseball players have no say whatsoever in what teams they are traded to. None. So your statement about "players are less likely to want to play there" is just silly rambling, and is completely irrevelant to the concept of trading of MLB players.

As far as having the resources to TRADE for high-level players, small market teams are at no disadvantage, because they have their full complement of 50 draft picks every season to stock their minor league teams. No team has ever been able to say they had a bad baseball draft because they had traded away any draft picks, which of course you can't do in baseball.

I certainly agree that once players have earned enough active roster seasons to become eligible for free agency, small market teams are at a definite disadvantage. Which is why I stressed TRADES as opposed to free agency.

Either you weren't thinking clearly when you posted that remark, or you are really clueless about the difference between trades and free agency in baseball.

( I agree this belongs on the MSB - just tired of people lumping all Red Sox fans under the "bandwagoner" heading. They have had tons of fans for many, many decades, long before 2004. I started following them 10 years before the oldest active player (Tim Wakefield) was even born. And I too hate the big free agent signings - baseball was more fun when there was still a reserve clause, i.e., no free agency.)

exactly. i can't stand people that do this. and i love hearing the excuses they come up with trying to prove they're not bandwagon fans

Neither. Ive been a sports fan for nearly all of my 29 years on this planet, I understand what a trade is dumbass. The point is that even if a player doesnt have a no trade clause in his contract, a small market team is less likely to pull off a trade because they would need to be able to keep the guy in town. So, if a player has a year left or two on his contract, a major market had an advantage because they know they can resign him. Thus, the advantage with big market teams landing major players via trade results from them having 1) more money to extend contracts or resign players and 2) being an attractive enough destination for said start to stick around more than 1 year.
