We played them two weeks after 9/11 in TENN. Then we beat them in the SEC title game.........

Thread title says 2001 but I think that's when we played the Sugar Bowl against Ill. - season was 2000, no?

After ole Miss where Ro didn't even reach 20 passes if memory serves, they turned him and Reed lose and the rest is history. Were it not for 9/11 and allowing us to catch AU at the end of the season after we'd turned the corner who knows how much different our current Golden Age would have been.

Really great point. If I remember correctly, Saban played for the clock that first half and OM blocked the punt. He was booed going into halftime. Something happened that day, and maybe Jimbo talked Saban into the air raid we finished with.

But you are right, that Auburn game being moved was huge for us. We wouldn't have beat them at the time and then not won the West and the SEC. Crazy how that OM game changed things for our program.

It was 2001. We did play Ill that same season.

2000 we were 8-4. Played GT in the peach bowl.

I remember walking out of Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington thinking "This team isn't going to win the SEC" after we beat Kentucky on a last minute pass to Michael Clayton.

I was glad to be wrong.

I wasn't too concerned with the close win at Kentucky. I just figured we were a little beat up after losing to two really good teams (UT and UF). I did become worried after the Ole Miss loss at home. I really didn't know how the season would end.

What a great run they made at the end of the season. We had a lot of help winning the west, but that offense was really clicking on that 6 game win streak.
