Because people are trying to save the lives of their friends, relatives, co-workers, people they don't know and will never meet. It's not just old people, it's young people with diseases, people going through chemo and other treatments. It's a matter of trying to keep the healthcare system operational for all of the other things that people need treatment for on a daily basis. At this point if you don't get it, nothing will convince you.
The vast majority of those people are still going to get it. Not sure what there is too convince, math don't care. For people that are older andor sick, hiding out is really the only hope, but in the end its a delay... most will get this in the next year or two... people can't sit home for years waiting on a vaccine... meaning the majority of people.
You can't just simple shutdown the economy over something like this, that is how the hospital operates.
More people will die of the flu this year and its not even close.

Trends don't back that up at all. They do back up the fact that the healthcare system will be overwhelmed and overrun if nothing is done.

There is no cure. A trend is only temporary, this is more transmittable than the flu... you're not stopping anything... only slight delay.

Seems like there was a quack poster on here yesterday suggesting that the S. Koreans had stumbled on anti-malarial medicines which had remarkable success. Amazing success. we all needed to follow S. Korea, which had the answers.
Now what crackpot poster was that?

There is no cure only treatment. The South Koreans appear to have come up with a successful treatment... but even without that treatment... either way the flu deaths will be much higher than this.
LINK
CDC estimates are 34,000 flu deaths last year, that's 93 a day in the U.S.
The outrage!
Granny is most likely going to die anyhow, the treatment that SK came up with could significantly help. If you are 80+ years old, you should be hiding out in a cabin in the woods with a fence.

Even if you assume these crazy assumptions of the doomsdayers... there is no way to save those people.

Yet only 100 reported cases in La. My neighbor is a surgery assistant, says she doesn't care if she gets it, might already have it, she's in her late 20s. As far as destroying the economy, yes, you've been rr.
There are 2 non cases in one of my hospitals ICU. The med surg and tele unit in that same hospital have over 50 cases. The numbers are still behind with testing.Where do you think the normal icu patients are? They are on the floor. We have 4 ventilators in that same hospital in the Ed that cannot move when we have expanded the icu capacity by 10 beds and they are all full. I just opened up another huge icu that we are trying to staff in another hospital bc the other ICUs are full of these patients. I’m bringing in huge numbers of agency nurses to try to stay ahead of this. I will tell you again. You are a stupid frick. I have not stopped working in 2 weeks except to sleep. We are two weeks in this will be much worse in 3 weeks. People have treated the quarantine like a joke. I have 4 staff members that have already been hospitalized from this disease. We are running out of Personal Protective Equipment for our staff. They are literally saying frick this and walking off units and leaving. This is the story of one of our community hospitals that is not prepared for this sort of capacity. We have larger hospitals that are also being over run. We are desperately trying to get more health care providers in on crisis contracts to help staff and build new ICUs. If we do not you will start seeing mass deaths like in Italy.

Agree.I keep saying it but 98% of the people who get it WILL SURVIVE.You cannot destroy the economy and people's lives to save the 2%. It makes no sense. I don't have a problem with the 4 week self quarantine but after that we need to reevaluate how we are handling this. Elderly need to self quarantine. Still need to keep socializing to a min but let restaurants/gyms/ ect. reopen. If you still want to practice total social distancing that is on you. But I should be able to go play golf and eat out and take my chances which the %'s are on my side of the argument.

So screw hospital workers who get it so I can play golf and do as I please? I hope you don’t get it and drown in your own fluids because no respirators are available. You can’t be that thick!

Well you can listen to the guy in the red hat who believed in January and early February that this was all a hoax or you can listen to the medical professionals.
yes it is your choice and your life but you going out and potentially spreading it to the others just shows how shallow and selfish you are.

There is an truly impressive amount of ignorance in this thread, even by Rant standards. That is saying a lot, b/c this site is a remarkable collection of stupidity.
Go back and look at the posts in this thread from the beginning on or about March 12. And for many posters, look at how much their opinions hew to FOX news and run against good common sense and, if you believe in such things, medical science. Of course, nobody knew exactly how this would play out, but it pretty much follows what health care experts expected from the jump. Those posts, few in number, are here, too.

Swine Flu killed nearly 13,000 in the U.S. WHERE was the MEDIA PANIC?

Someone doesn’t understand the concept of flattening the curve to enable the healthcare community to keep up with the numbers...

Yes can bet your arse if a democrat was the incumbent this shite would be on the third page of the newspaper and take up maybe two minutes on the network news.
When Obama was president and we had the last outbreak, 3000 Americans died and the world did not end.
This is mostly about politics. This isn’t as bad as the swine flu or avian flu that hit in the past decade.

The Chinese data says 70% of the people that went to the hospital died, 95%+ of the people put on vents died not in a month or a year... they died at the hospital.
I would say Italy ran into the same issue although there isn't data yet... meaning when these people get to the hospital... its just a place to store bodies.
Regardless, the numbers are not significantly different than the flu but they are worse than the flu as death rates. The transmission rate appears to be slightly worse, or at least the guess.

THE SIMPLE NUMERICAL FACTS
FACTS: Last year flu, CDC: 490,600 hospitalizations and 34,200 deaths.
Case fatality rate on the same testing basis for Coronavirus today: 6.97%
Right now, US, 31,888 positives, 398 deaths. Case fatality rate considering that essentially all Coronavirus tests to date have been in hospitals: 1.25% But that's not fair, because the CDC says only 12% of "cases" are hospitalized. Ok, so we'll adjust: 3,826 positives, 398 deaths. Case fatality rate when comparing like for like: 10.4%.
Is Coronavirus more deadly than seasonal flu? Yes.
Is it 10 or 100x more deadly to the point that we should shut down the economy and spazz out? NO.
These are not my numbers. They're the CDC's numbers. The same CDC and folks like Fauci that are trying to scare the living **** out of you, and being intentionally falsely reported by both politicians and the media. This is all public data folks. Most people never see a doctor for Coronavirus, just as most people never see a doctor for The Flu.

This was somewhat solvable by what I said, isolate the old and sick.... a very workable solution, without the chance of Mad Max i.e. credit market collapse or more like destruction.
Those old people showing up at your hospital are more than likely dead.

Yes, actually most do, the problem is... it doesn't seem to matter with this virus... as those old people aren't going to make it. Also, you don't shut down the whole economic system for basically the flu plus. Further, the numbers will eventually spike up again, you going to shut everything down again?
Some people don't understand fricking common sense.

Its right in there, of course this is from late last week. I would say its no doubt at this point that this does not impact the vast majority of people, most people will never know they have it... or have so mild symptoms they probably won't think much of it.
Even in Italy, the average age is like 79+ for males for death but the normal life expectancy in Italy for a male is 80.
