Yeah at LSU mid 80s...Deaf Valley was definitely a thing. Whether or not it was in any way and "official" thing is another point.

by mid-80s the Welcome ti Death Valley sign was up on west side.

i was a kid so can’t testify to what was being said though.

Conversation I had in 2001

Me: Hey when did Clemson start calling Memorial Stadium “Death Valley?”

My friend who went to Clemson: 1942 after we killed Presbyterian and their coach said he felt like walking into Death Valley. When did LSU start calling Tiger Stadium “Death Valley?”

Me: Pretty sure it was 1941.

Clemson is the original death valley. Clemson was called death valley in 1948 and LSU in 1959.

As someone who has attended a game in both stadiums, LSU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>CLEMSON

Clemson may have had it first but LSU's is better and there was an actual tiger in the stadium for many of those years. Much more deadly than a rock mounted on a post.

Animal cruelty isn't really a legitimate argument.

2 Separate Timelines:

Clemson
1948 Presbyterian remarked it was like "Death Valley"
I'm not sure how soon after that the moniker was bestowed on the stadium
Just because a coach said something about it doesn't mean they started referring to it as such

LSU
Like Clemson there is murkiness in the history
"Deaf Valley"? I guess some people called it that
The moniker was officially bestowed upon Tiger Stadium in 1959
I think the sign went up in the 1980's

So you have 2 timelines

If you want to be technical Clemson can trace the origin to their moniker earlier, but when it became "official" who knows... I guess when Presbyterian sent them that rock I think a year later?

You can't really trace how early people called TS "Deaf Valley" but the name was first tossed out as Death Valley in 1959.

It's a dumb argument but whatever

It's like Leibniz and Newton both inventing calculus around the same time in their own different ways

Clemson stole the name from LSU just like they stole that rock from a national park I hear.
Kinda like stealing a free ride into the D1 NCAA Football playoffs with that joke of a schedule!

Seems stealing is a Clemson thing!

Clemson is very comparable to Auburn. Both middling land grant institutions named after the unimpressive cities in which they are located.

I’ve been to both...
Clemson’s Memorial is like the “G” rated Death Valley, family atmosphere...it gets loud...it’s a cool place...
LSU is the “X” rated Death Valley...
There really is no comparison...

I’ve followed the Tigers since I was a kid in the 70’s. As far back as I can remember Tiger Stadium has always been called Death Valley.

Lived in Atl about 20 years ago, a local cable documentary about Clemson. The Clemson guy says Clemson literally copied everything from LSU. Everything but that stupid rock.

As a kid in the 70s, or young teen in early 80s, that’s probably all you heard but it was most certainly referred to as Deaf Valley earlier. Both were used after late 50s defeat of Clemson and by around 75-80 Deaf Valley became basically non-existent.
