It could be any number of reasons but the timing is what I have an issue with. I don't have any ill will on the kid but unless he's seriously hurt and wouldn't be able to play the bowl game anyway, there's no reason he couldn't have waited another 3 weeks.

It's just a bad thing to do to his former teammates.
His family wants him and his brother playing together. Now they are on the recruiting market together. It's not rocket surgery.

He clearly wanted a guarantee that he would be the starter without a QB competition going into next year.

I don’t see Johnson Sr. getting involved like that and Kelly seems like he wouldn’t put up with it for a second. No parent is going to say anything worth a shite to Kelly and have it actually stick. It is Kelly’s ship.

However, I could see him definitely serving an interest about going elsewhere for both his kids to play together, which next year meant Max more than likely wasn’t starting with a five star coming in.

CBK probably had an honest conversation with them and they didn’t like what they heard.

Fair enough answer.

If that's the case, and it's probably along those lines, I think he still should've played the bowl game.

It's just a bad look to leave before the bowl game for him, IMO.

Makes no sense to go now when he could do it the day after the bowl game.

I understand that. That much is obvious.

The point I was getting at is that it's a bad look for him to do this to the team he was leading the entire season right before the bowl game.

It somewhat depends on they operated with O. Maybe they thought they had assurances that Kelly didn’t entertain? I definitely could see BK give them a lukewarm shoulder.

If he were your kid, would you encourage him to participate in the bowl practices and bowl game, while knowing he was not going to play for that team/coach next year? Would you consider how it affects your other son's recruitment?

It was a bad look for Brian Kelly to jump ship while his team was a legit playoff contender. Who cares.g

Well he committed to LSU for a reason. He played this entire season as the starter.

Yes I'd expect him to participate in bowl practices and the bowl game.

I wouldn't expect him to feel like he is 'owed' something. Not saying he does but bolting on his team sure makes it seem like he's upset about something.

He has every right to leave if he wants, I'm just saying the timing makes him look like a jerk.

If he's not going to play here next year and he's set on being somewhere else, fine. I have no problem with that. Play the bowl game and that's that.

By him doing this, he's forcing a true freshman to burn his redshirt (that is entirely up to Garrett but all signs point to that happening) and on top of that, it's a stick in the eye to every one of his former teammates.

He could've easily waited 3 weeks.

Playing one more game would maybe help with the transfer stock. Leaving at this stage points to a trigger event of some kind. I don’t think it’s the new OC. Every OC has to pass the ball and adjust to personnel.

I would question a coach that guarantees my son the starting QB job just to sign my other son

Except you’re a SB winning QB and know that it’s all a business at the end of the day.

So if Max and Jake were your kids, you would really tell Max to play in the bowl game, knowing neither of them will be there next year and their mutual options would effectively end tomorrow?

I guess? Just seems clear that winning and development are not at the forefront of their minds.

They are but need to come with assurances of the starting job. I’m not saying I agree with it BTW. Just speculating like everyone else.

Yes. You finish what you start. That’s something I was taught while growing up and it’s the same thing I teach my kids.

As far as the other kid, he’s about to be a grown man, he can make his own choices independent of his big brother. I would never try to make my kids choices mirror their siblings.

For starters, I wouldn't tell my son to do anything.

However, seeing that he started 12 of 12 games this season and after mulling it over with mom and dad and he wants to go somewhere else next season, I would encourage him to play one more game and then it's done. One more game and you can throw passes to your brother at some other school.

As silicon stated, it could help his stock in transferring, it wouldn't end on a sour note with his teammates, the fans, what have you.

Instead, he's leaving now to do....... what?

Exactly. You don't just pick up your stuff and go home when you don't get what you want.

It's one more game.

Oh I would.

I would tell his arse to get back in that locker room and finish what he started. He might not listen but he would be told.
