2007 opener - LSU 45 Mississippi State 0
First, we had a mature senior QB.
Second, State didn't have a QB like Locker. I'm not even sure that one could say that State had a QB at all for that game.
Third, six picks.

And people complained like we lost the damn game.
Who? I thought we looked pretty good and it was followed up the next week with a drubbing of VA Tech. Its only a bad example if it throws a wet blanket on your thread?

I feel like last night was inconclusive in terms of how the rest of the season will go. I agree that if we play like we did last night, we will lose a lot of SEC games, but the travel, first game kinks and the improved coaching of Washington does need to be taken into account.
I believe Chavis will be better than Malveto, but I am now resigned to the fact that we will never again see that aggressive, arse-kicking defense that defined the program under Saban, as long as Miles is coach. It's just not Miles' philosophy, and it's not going to happen, period, as much as we wish to see that again. I won't question Chavis' lack of sideline animation- he's had a good bit of success in his career, so I am confident he is not a deer in the headlights as some claim he looked to be last night.
I hope the new position coaches on defense can improve the fundamentals. It's painfully obvious that these defensive players who have been in the program during the Miles tenure have not received the kind of coaching that our DBs received during the Saban years, which explains why they have become an increased liability every year since he has been here. Fundamentals like tackling seemed lost on this team last year, and I am disappointed that we missed too many tackles last night.
I am not ready to chalk this up as a 4-5 loss season yet. This is not another 0-12 Washington team we played, and we did have limited scouting capability. We'll see how we play against Vanderbilt.
It was the first game of the year, so I don't think it's reason to panic. But we do need to play much, much better to be where we expect to be in the SEC, and I think Coach Miles realizes that.

I agree that there is plenty of areas to improve.
I also think that it is unfair to categorize last night's problems on either side of the ball as extensions of last year. There will be corrections made. W may have played their most inspired game all year against us. W may turn out to be a really good team. LSU was never forced to abandon a vanilla game plan.
It's simply too early to determine if last night's game was indicative of anything . . . other than it being the first game of the season.

Maybe a few more shots of SARK scribbling on his playsheet during plays would've been money.
And a lot more on the UW safty who "laid the wood on Jefferson", even as said safty wobled to get up after the ferocious hit.
