UNC has self-reported academic infractions and moved nine players onto the practice squad.
According to Joe Schad, those players include Austin, linebacker Bruce Carter, and defensive end Robert Quinn. Losing any one of these players would damper UNC's Coastal Division hopes, but all three? In addition to highly rated starting cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendrick Burney, recently dismissed for various murky who-knows-what?

According to a statement released by the University, professors Jack Evans, Lissa Broome, and former and current Faculty Athletics Representatives are spearheading the investigation on the academic side.

Others involved in student affairs, the compliance office, and UNC’s legal counsel’s office will also be involved in the investigation.

The academic infractions could be messier than the alleged contact with Wichard and other agents.

nothing confirmed but rumors/sources say 9-12 players moved to practice squad. at least 6 starters including the defensive studs.

2 cornerbacks may or may not have been kicked off of team.

UNC held press conference with chancellor, AD, and Coach Butch Davis to explain investigation but did not name names nor detail punishments.
They did say that none of the suspect players would play until cleared of wrongdoing.

North Carolina expanded the inquiry into its football program to include allegations of academic impropriety involving a former tutor writing papers for players, sources said Thursday.

The Tar Heels relegated at least nine players to the scout team on Wednesday due to the academic portion of the probe, the sources said. The group included players who were questioned as part of the NCAA's inquiry related to agents and trips to Miami.

Sources said starting defensive tackle Marvin Austin, starting defensive end Robert Quinn and starting linebacker Bruce Carter were among the players who were relegated to the scout team.

"We are looking into improprieties that existed outside the classroom," Baddour said. "That's about as close to that as I can get."

The announcement came nine days before the No. 18 Tar Heels' opener against No. 21 LSU in Atlanta, and roughly two months after the NCAA began an investigation into whether two key players -- Austin and receiver Greg Little -- received improper benefits from agents. Defensive line coach John Blake's longtime friendship with California-based agent Gary Wichard also has drawn the NCAA's interest.

Baddour declined to provide additional details about the tutor, except to say that "the person was in [the university's] employ. When we found out about the issues, the tutor was not in our employ."

Baddour said the university has assembled a team to investigate the academic questions. While there is no timetable to resolve that aspect of the probe, "it is likely that the review would extend beyond the start of the season," he said.

If that happens, he said the school will decide if those players will play against LSU, and Baddour said that decision could come as late as gameday.

Regardless of the who is running the next stage of this investigation, it is apparent that the Carolina team that shows up in Atlanta to take on LSU on September 4 will not be the same team that Carolina fans envisioned it would be.

“As much as we’d like to finalize both the reviews of possible agent violations and academic issues before the first game, there is no definitive timetable,” Baddour said. “It’s likely the review will extend beyond the start of the season.”

Baddour also said at the press conference that Davis will have to “make some assumptions” about who will be available to play against LSU and how to go about preparing for the season opener that is now less than 10 days away.

The pending investigations could cripple the North Carolina football program this season, which was expected to be a strong competitor in the ACC and potential BCS dark horse.

someone explain why they can't get to the bottom of this with two days of sworn testimony?

it sounds like they are pouring salt in the wound, making them wonder who can play.

That really is too bad. What could have been a really competitive game may not even be close.

We're kind of in a strange situation, now. If we blow them out, they were undermanned. If they stay with us, we aren't any good.

Screw it- put the hammer on them and move on.

ESPN is reporting Havelock native Bruce Carter is one of the players being investigated for academic fraud. A source close to the team told NewsChannel 12 that nine players are working with the scout team until the NCAA makes its decision on the agent investigation, and that the whole team is being looked at to see how far the academic fraud spreads.

Honeslty this kinda sucks.

I was pretty confident about our chances against them. Now even if LSU dominates from start to finish it will carry no weight as a quality win due to losing several key players. Im dissapointed.

There are no "clean" major D1 programs. Just less dirty ones.

I am very proud that LSU has not had to put up with this shite in a while though.

I hate all these tards on the rant that have to be english professors. If you want to grade something go grade some college papers and leave the rant to us dumb folk!! Hell when I have a thought about something I apologize for my lack of spelling or gammar. That' my free pass for the year. Pass that along to all the english professors on the rant!! I'm out!!
