This thread is for those intelligent posters that realize that you don't fire coaches every 2 years, you have to give a guy a chance to succeed or you will never get a good coach, realize that Louisiana has produced zero high school talent for the last two years, understand that this team was extremely young and will grow into a good team.

I will save this thread to be bumped during next year's NCAA tournament when the LSU Tigers are once again dancing.

Post here if you agree.

I don't have strong feelings on Trent but when do you think he should be fired? After next year w a non winning conference record? Or the next year?

Ok, I'll bite. With the exception of O'Bryant, why will this team going to be any more athletic next year? Sure they will be more experienced. Experience is rarely an issue in today's major college basketball...it is athletic ability of which LSU is sorely lacking. I see no reason why that changes next year.

Weights and strength training. Garrett Green has improved alot from a size and speed standpoint, he just isn't talented. These other guys are, just weak.

I think Trent Johnson CAN get the job done. I support giving him *one* more season to show that. This includes signing Felix, Gathers, etc and making the NCAA tournament. I support the guy and think he can make that happen but not as enthusiastically as yourself.

I haven't been a Trent basher, and I too hope that they'll turn the corner next season...The big freshman signee, and the transfer are going to have to be as advertised for this to happen...If they don't turn the corner next season, Trent needs to be fired.

I will admit that I'm really not a huge Trent Johnson backer. I don't claim to know all of the ins and outs of college basketball. However, I'm sick of the "Fire Trent Johnson" crew. You just can't fire a coach after 3 seasons, when 1 of them was a SEC Championship team. His philosophy, maybe by circumstances, not by choice, is to build a nucleus of players that will play together for 3-4 years and with that experience they will become a good team. I say give him that chance. Look at this year's tournament teams (my bracket research has pointed this out), many of the dangerous teams are loaded with juniors and seniors, players that aren't good enough for the NBA, but they play well as a unit (see Notre Dame).

Also, I don't think LSU basketball is a job that will garner a lot of attention from good college coaches if we start firing coaches without giving them a chance to rebuild.

I'm in line with the other posters in this thread, if next year is another SEC cellar-type year, then perhaps it's time. But if next year we climb up to near .500 SEC record, maybe better, and we get into the post-season then maybe we're on the right track.

Brady was on the hot seat and he never had two seasons in row like Trent has had.

I don't think that LSU's standard is that we are happy to make it to the dance once every two or three years. A nice deep run every three years or so would probably be acceptable.

It's that we aren't even competetive in the fricking SEC, which isn't a powerhouse b-ball conference. We aren't Kentucky, Duke or UNC, but can't we at least be oh I don't know...Tennessee?

There are reasons to believe that it will get better.

That is mainly contingent on O'Bryant and Hamilton coming in and being solid in the post. One good thing is that Hamilton was a solid rebounder at ISU. Hopefully he can defend down low as well. One of our biggest problems is that we had no low post defense.
Also, once Storm got healthy late in the year he started putting up decent numbers.

You also have to believe that Turner, Dbeck, and Stringer will all be improved next year. If we can get any presence down low, that would also lead to open looks that they didn't get this year.

At this point my concern is still having a true PG who can run the team. Maybe Stringer will improve so that he can do it. Let's not remember this was really the first time he's had to be a true PG.

While I don't expect this team to be Top 25 next year. I do expect it to be much improved and make a run at a NCAA birth. If O'Bryant is truly as good as some think, it could be even better. Don't discount how important it would be to have a 6'9"-6'10" post presence down low that other teams would have to double team.
I also would totally write off M.White. As a starter he struggled this year. But, as a bench guy coming in with a year in the system, he could be very valuable next year.

Because Trent isn't going to cheat. Hey, ESPN was reporting last night that Pearl may possibly be available after this year. (Please don't turn this into a "Let's hire Bruce Pearl thread)

Brady also had 3 or 4 high school All-Americans in his backyard and in Texas (A. Randolph). There are some things that frustrate me about Trent - not being an "active" coach on the sidelines, not having an ace recruiter on staff, etc.. but I do like his approach to building a program. He had ZERO time to bring in any decent talent his first year, and last year's class I think will pan out eventually (although I have my doubts about Stringer). If O'Bryant and Hamilton are solid, and Issac can add a little more athleticism and deep threat, we'll be improved. We're still a solid PG away from being REALLY good, so I hope there is one out there that can still be snatched up for next year - starting spot is practically guaranteed if you can run an offense.

Word is that TJ is going after a JUCO PG named Dylan Talley hard right now. If we could land him this team has the potential to be really good next year.

Something I've pointed out on multiple occasions is that of the 5 "normal" starters this year (Stringer, Turner, D-Beck, White, Warren) three or four could be coming off the bench in 2011-12. If nothing else we are going to be a very very deep team for the first time in a long long time.

If he improves he should stay. Like it has been said, you don't fire someone after 3 years. They need a chance for their classes to make a difference and time to build.

Since when is wanting the LSU basketball team to be more competitive and intense than the last two years of fail make you a hater? Would you have wanted everyone to keep quiet about Curley Hallman and push for him to stay. Curley by the way recruited significantly better players than Trent and was much more sucessful in that context. In general his teams were able to stay on the field with the rest of SEC which is more than Trent can say with a very watered down SEC. I give him a pass on his first class but his last two classes have been fail and fail. With only Turner being a legit SEC player in the whole group!
