We get Ole Miss at home
I wouldn't pencil Ole Miss in as a win just yet.
They're young with a good QB that is still learning the system. They are going to be much better at the end of the year than they are right now.

Ole Miss lost to an FCS team and struggled against Tulane. I would hope that they end up being much better at the end of the year than they are now or else they'd be winless in the SEC.
I honestly think that Vandy has a legitimate shot to beat them on Saturday.
FWIW, we're 2-0 now, I'd say that we have a Vandyesque game against MSU and Tenn, have a UNCesque game against WVU and FLA, before blowing out McNeese.
At this point, we're 7-0 (4-0) going into Jordan-Hare. That one could go either way, IMO depending on how Auburn progresses between then and now. Six weeks is a long time.
If we win that game in any fashion other than a nail-biter, I would think that we would head into the bye sky-high with confidence and play the best game that we have seen in YEARS when Alabama comes to Death Valley. I'm not saying that we'll win, but I think everyone will be able to say that Miles had the team up for the game, and the players and coaches were well-prepared and made appropriate adjustments.
We win, we're in SECCG and BCSCG talks, I don't think that Arkansas will be in the discussion at this point, but I do think they'll still be a very good team looking to be the spoiler.
We lose, and we could very well lose to Ole Miss and Arkansas and finish the season 9-3 after starting 8-0 (depending on Auburn). The by-product of getting that high for a game is that if you lose, it absolutely kills the rest of your season. It would be hard for Miles to avoid this collapse again, as it has happened the last two years after this game.
So... anything from 12-0 to 8-4 is theoretically possible, but no way would I say anything less than that. I may change my tune next month, but after watching Florida struggle to put away South Florida and the no-name school from Week 1, and now with the pending suspension of Rainey, this has the tell-tale signs of a team in trouble. If we played them this week, we would win convincingly.

I think AU is still a perfect match up for us as they are still thin at LB and that plays into our hands.
UF.. they have bamer the week before us. Should set up nicely for us and Les gets a win at the swamp.

This schedule is a bitch, but the way that games are positioned relative to each other is about the best we could have asked for.

Not only for the reason you mention, but also because that seems to be Houston Nutt's MO. A shaky or even bad start, then steady improvement.

Not saying you're wrong, but it's a question of degree. With what they have put on the field thus far, steady improvement over the course of the season could STILL result in them having a losing SEC record and getting drubbed at the end of the year.

Be careful about wishing for a new coach...given LSU's track record of HC hiring pre-$aban, the next coach could actually be worse.
With the possible, and debatable, exception of Curley Hallman replacing Mike Archer, every time LSU has fired a coach in the last 30 years, we've hired a replacement who was better.

he is so eaten up with Miles hatred that he can't convey his message so that the other all-out haters can join in.

Our last five SEC games...
Florida
Auburn
Alabama
Ole Miss
Arkansas
It would not take anything drastic happening to win four of those.
FIFY
I think beating Florida on the road or Alabama anywhere would be pretty drastic.
I also think sweeping Auburn and Arkansas on the road (something we haven't done since 1996) would be pretty drastic.
Both would have to happen in order to win four of our last five SEC games.

The truly sad part is that every game on the schedule is winnable. I'm not impressed at all with Florida. Auburn and Arkansas will be tough battles on the road but they aren't any better than us, and we have Bama at home.
With a good head coach, I'd be seriously entertaining thoughts of national championship.
But we don't have a good head coach. And an 8-4 season is more likely.
No, the truly sad part is you can't enjoy the season because you are are all doom and gloom.
Are you high? I can't even get any work done this week because I'm so exciting about being in Tiger Stadium for the first time in 2010.
Doom and gloom? You have an interesting definition of objectivity.

it sure would be great if we had a coach that had experience winning a SEC division, a SEC championship or a BCS bowl.
He did this with far superior talent. Over the last couple of years, the talent level has started to even out.
Surely, you're not going to sit there and tell me that Miles won those titles because of his coaching abilities.

If only we had all that....![]()
I fear that "had" is the operative word in that sentence.
Hey, I'll be tickled shitless if we get to 10 wins this season. My heart says we can do it. My brain says 8-4.
Posted on 9/15/10 at 3:55 pm to Nuts4LSU
My question is not so much COULD we get someone better than Miles if we were to fire him, but rather what would the reaction be to this coach should he follow two men who posted .750 and .779 (current) winning percentages, respectively with an 8-4 or worse season?
I cannot IMAGE the pressure someone would be under here to have to come in behind BOTH Saban and Miles.

So saying that LSU had more talent on the field than UNC and Vandy, and that Bill Stewart is inept; that is stupid?
You just keep on taking every single comment as a slight on Miles, that way you can spout off his coaching record for 100th time. Same shite every single thread, you bore me.
Posted on 9/15/10 at 3:58 pm to mike4lsu
You worries about coming here to Shreveport are unfounded. The Bowl is no longer affiliated with the SEC,

I am as much in support of Miles as anyone you're likely to find on this site, but I can admit that if he goes 7-5(3-5), 9-3(5-3), and something in that range this year, he's likely gone at the end of the season. At LSU, double-digit win seasons are expected to be the norm, not the odd-year experience.

No question. Nutt wasn't immune to that at Arkansas, and likely isn't now.

A bad (overall) Houston Nutt team with a losing SEC record is still tough for LSU under Les Miles. At home in 2005, with national championship possibilities still on the table for us, we barely squeaked by a bad Arkie team by 2.

All new coaches are given a couple of years free ride to get their systems implemented, coaching staffs solidified and start recruiting the kind of players they need. He'd need to be back up to 10 wins by his third year or so, though, or he'd get some pressure.

See my above post. If we manage to get by Alabama (and I'd rather not hear your thoughts on how possible this is), then we have ULM as a way to lick our wounds before taking on Ole Miss and we'll be ready for that game. If we lose a nail-biter again, I think it'll just completely deflate this team and we could and probably will go 1-2 the rest of the schedule.
