Etling was a 4-star recruit and he was thrown into a horrible situation. As a true freshman he had to play behind an offensive line that would have had to improve to be putrid. Purdue gave up 38 sacks that season and had less than no running game. Most of the time he was running for his life almost at the moment of the snap.

The second factor was the infamous John Shoop. Shoop burned through three quarterbacks before we finally fired him. Multiple people have said his offensive philosophy was needlessly complicated and I tend to agree. Etling might be talented, but you had him playing behind that offensive line trying to run a complicated offense with no real running game and of course you’re going to struggle. If Drew Brees magically came back and played on that team he too would have struggled.

For those who want to discount what he did at Purdue.

The article states more than once that LSU fans are ripping on Etling because he came from Purdue. I'm not sure where the author gets that, but it certainly does not seem to be a common complaint here.

It was true when he first transferred here that a lot...maybe most...LSU fans that posted on this board were pretty denigrating and dismissive of him. Of course that isn't all LSU fans, just some of the more blinders-on rantards.

Y'all realize that he's only going to complete about 50% of his passes for 150 or so yards and maybe 1 TD, right?

He's not the savior y'all are looking for. He's Plan B since BH (who is WAY more gifted) can't put it together mentally.

That may be so, but it's still better than what we've been getting. Can't be any worse.

Those 10-yard out routes he threw into the stands were "gifts"?

Why is it some on the board can't believe DE can improve as he matures and gets late in his college carrier. But think that BH will automatically be better even though he has shown that that is not there mentally.

You have to let us know what your definition of gifted is because my definition doesn't mean stare down your receivers, throwing into double/triple covarge, and overthrowing 10 yard passes.

BH is more gifted, but only in terms of raw natural ability. But that's the kicker, that can only get you so far. It is usually better to be more poised, with less ability, than the other way around.
