re: The basics of the SEC/CBS contract (Read before you post)

We know the rules, we want it changed. CBS could have easily picked the Alabama/Tennessee game this year leaving our tradition in tact for an ESPN night game. Either game is going to be a ratings win for CBS. LSU should have the right to refuse the game being broadcast by CBS if it interferes with having a minimum number of SEC home night games. ESPN would be glad to have this game and there's little to no risk that it would not be televised by ESPN if LSU had the option to refuse CBS. Saturday night in Death Valley is part of the draw toward LSU for fans and for opposing fans. It's one of the reasons SEC football is so successful and that the SEC can demand the type of money that they do from the networks. If you start changing the dynamics of what makes the school and conference great, then you start losing what makes it that valuable in the first place.

It is funny to see so many people getting upset. CBS gets sec games exclusively. So if CBS were to pick up night games and not pick lsu then lsu would have to play during the dAy. Also We obviously have become the most popular team to watch this season and what is wrong with that?

While I realize that ratings are not the only driver, and-I'll admit this-I'm not TV exec, but I have to figure they are important, this is a pretty good site for this year. I'm not going to read all of it now but I'm just throwing it out there for those that like facts in addition to here say and conjecture.
Surprisingly LSU/Florida did pretty poorly, in fact it seems a lot of the LSU games network are not fairing great compared to other lesser games.

What is funny is to see tards like you who have no comprehension skills whatsoever.
Nobody is trying to dictate that CBS not show SEC games. All anyone wants is respect for one of the great traditions of LSU football and that is at least ONE fricking night game against our SEC brethren. CBS and the SEC and ESPN all need to come to some kind of accomodation that benefits not only CBS, ESPN, the SEC and the viewers, but the great fans of LSU and their desire to maintain a valued tradition.
How does that keep flying over the heads of so many dumbass posters? **answered my own question.

Boycott CBS; boycott its sponsors.
You're not going to convince CBS to pick another game for the sake of our night game tradition. It's all about dollars and cents. If they don't honor our tradition, then we don't honor them.
If in return for forcing us to move our game to day time, the state of Louisiana boycotts their sponsors, I suspect we end up on ESPN.
You don't have to sit down and take this. Be pragmatic in your response and CBS will be pragmatic too.

I don't think it's flying over the heads of many posters.
We fully understand and appreciate the traditions and our preference for Saturday night football in Death Valley.
But you have to understand that the lack of Saturday night SEC games in Death Valley is due in large part to our success. If we were 4&2 or 3-3, chances are there would be more televised games Saturday night on ESPN.
And since I'm an out-of-stater I want to see our Tigers on TV no matter if its CBS or ESPN.

But make no mistake.... IMO it is important that LSU and its fans make it clear to everyone involved that everything being equal we would definitely prefer to play at night, and it's not a tradition that we're going to sit idly by and watch slip away as a "price of doing business" while we continue our dominance into the future.
This.
And why is this so hard to understand for the "deal with it" crowd?

FIFY.

Exactly. I don't understand why people see these things as mutually exclusive. We can be successful, and have at least 1 SEC night game at home. It's just the TV contracts aren't structured in a way that makes that always possible, but they could be.

Do you really think that even if CBS and the SEC office were neutral, that the rest of the SEC members would be willing to grant LSU that request? I don't.

There is one more provision in the CBS contract that is relevant: SEC teams are prohibited from playing conference games on other networks in the same time slot as a CBS broadcast of an SEC game. thus, on the doubleheader day, KY at LSU was shut out of playing on TV after about 2:30, and so played on the SEC network in the morning. I believe that this provision could be renegotiated without it costing the SEC a ton of money. I understand where CBS is coming from--they paid a lot to get the game and they don't want the SEC competing against them on another network. But I also believe that CBS (and every other network) is so hungry for content that it would blink if the SEC drew a line in the sand. Similarly, I think that if the SEC insisted that CBS could not dictate the start time for a home game for any team more than twice a season, CBS would ultimately accept that as well. And in neither case do I believe it would cost the SEC meaningfully interms of what CBS will pay (especially if ESPN/ABC is sitting there ready to take what CBS won't). The issue is whether the SEC is willing to negotiate this just for LSU (and maybe Florida), in order to accomodate its desire for evening football games.

I cannot find a link yet, but CBS doesn't need the SEC one bit. They got vastly better ratings from their sitcoms on Saturday night than they did from the Alabama-UF game. If there was more money to be made for CBS, they would be doing it already.
ETA: Alabama v. UF pulled in 7.65 million from 8-11pm. Two and a Half Men, the very next week pulled in 9.4 million in only 30 minutes at 8pm on CBS.
As much as we love LSU football, the rest of the country would rather watch Two and a Half Men and 2 Broke Girls instead. Deal with it.
Bama ratings Two and a Half Men ratings

Saturday night ratings tend to suck on any network. And it really isn't the Staurday night slot where CBS needs the content. It's the Saturday afternoons when they're competing against the other networks broadcasting sports. And if Saturday night isn't paying off for them, they should be amenable to allowing LSU (or whoever) play against their prime time broadcast on another network.

I'm guessing they were not interested in having a mediocre Tennessee team on 2 weeks in a row...

I have a different theory:
CBS hates LSU
Best way to frick LSU--make them play in the daylight!!!
The contract theory, the money theory, the #1 in the country theory--all BS and none hold water. It's simply CBS
LSU.

I asked this is another thread. How can ESPN show the Bama/Ole Miss game at 5pm when the LSU/Tenn game is on CBS at 2:30. You know the LSU game will just be starting the 3rd quarter with all the TV timeouts. WOuldn't that violate the "provision" of a game beign telecast at the same time.
