But the big difference from them and the USMA are that Cadets at the USMA must commission after graduation. Where at aTm, Vtech, etc they can have 4 years of MS electives. Most regular state schools, you have to contract with ROTC starting with your Junior year (MS3).

Yeah A&M is nothing like the academies. But VMI and the Citadel aren't academies either. They only commission about half their cadets like A&M.

And it's been all downhill from there. And its a travesty the University refuses to name a building or otherwise commemorate the university's founder and one of the greatest military leaders the nation has ever produced.

If you go to either your a cadet unless your at the night school is one difference.

A&M you can go and not be a cadet

I'm comparing Corps to Corps though, so that's a moot point.

I doubt A&M has a hell week starting prior to your freshman year.

Actually they do, though I'm not sure how similar they are. A&M's has really begun to come under fire, or at least it was when I was there. There was a huge lawsuit after a cadet was seriously hurt. The Corps is really secretive and isolated from the rest of the student body.

I'm not sure if you are an alum of VMI or el Cid, but I would point a person towards aTm before The Citadel. I had a brother in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, and another at The Citadel. I could tell you stories that would make your skin crawl about The Citadel.

I am in a unique position to know both intimately. They should not be compared, but not for the same reasons your post connotates.

There is a reason Pat Conroy was persona non grata for 30+ years...

Just something to think about before blasting other schools.

And thats my point...you don't get a choice if you go to the classes at the Citadel or VMI...YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE CORP.

There are a few night classes offered for very few.

And no your Corp is nothing like The Citadel or VMI's.

I served 4 years in the U.S. Army, on the Korean D.M.Z. and in two parts of Iraq.

Met many good LSU officers and a bunch of Tiger Fan enlisted men. Nothing but good things to say about the area of our United States spanning from College Station, TX to Richmond, VA.

I Just did a quick scan but that seems to be in reference to the Fish Drill Team which is a select unit.

A&M does have FOW, which is the 1st week of school... but "Hell Week" is right before the end of the semester, before you can earn your corps brass... While going to class, just before finals...

chicageauxtiger, thanks for the kind words...I try to be respectful but it's genuine. I really like LSU and although I'm an Aggie at heart, I feel my brother made an excellent decision in going to LSU.

I'm in Chicago too - bundle up, low of TEN degrees. Apparently we got the whole "fly south for the winter" thing backwards!

As this thread has become derailed:

Hill Memorial Library at LSU houses some quite impressive books and records.

Book worth millions

ETA:

One item that receives a lot of attention is known as the "bloody book." The book, written by Jean-Baptiste Labat, is believed to have the bloodstains of Jean-Paul Marat, the French revolutionary stabbed to death in his bathtub.

A good read

I realized LSU was a former military school but I had no idea it had such a decorated military past.

The library at LSU is named after Gen Troy Middleton. Middleton came to LSU in 1937 as the Commandant of Cadets, was named VP of the university and stayed until he retired in 1937. He was recalled to duty in 1942 during WWII.
quote:

Middleton commanded the 45th Infantry Division during the Sicily, and Salerno battles, and then in December 1943 moved up to command the U.S. VIII Corps. Middleton's brilliant leadership in Operation Cobra and in the Battle of the Bulge led to his widespread recognition as a corps commander of extraordinary abilities. Retiring from the Army again, Middleton returned to LSU and, in 1950, was appointed to the university presidency.

That place is badass. My family donated a bunch of civil war stuff, mardi gras ball invitations, and other items from my great-great-great grandfather.

We are probably about to donate my great-grandfather's LSU Football Letter and a few pics of him, including one with the real "Mike" (the person).

If you get a chance to visit, do so, it is really cool. They often times make you wear white gloves and you can't bring any bags inside and you have to have an id to get it. Well worth it if you like history, especially Louisiana history.

As I've stated earlier, I've heard different from VMI grads. Care to elaborate on the key differences between the two Corps?
