Couldn't our football coach donate $100,000? That would keep 100 kids in the band.

Look at it this way. No matter how many people they cut, the ones to be cut first will come from the Colorguard, Golden Girls, and Woodwinds. Also, if the new number is anything of significance (over 50) then pre-game will have to change to accommodate less people. It takes a certain number to do what they do at every game. Then you also have to look at how many older members will want to come back next year when they reduce the size of the band and Director Wickes is gone. It is a bad combination and unless something changes, TGBFTL could take a plummet and that would make me

Cant they just take some of our funds for the new band hall to help keep the band full? You would think a full band is more important than a band hall that with LSU construction wont be seen in ten years.

As I mentioned above, we marched 192 in the original size that the Pregame program was designed for. When the band was increased they accommodated by doubling the vertical lines on the L and U in L-S-U and made the tunnel longer that the team runs thru.
Again, I don't endorse a reduction. The stadium has 30,000 more people than when I was in it and it's a challenge to drive that sound into so many human bodies that act as acoustic sponges.

So then you got to think. Unless the number is 300 marching pre-game or 192, they are either going to cut around 30 people, or around 130 people. Why keep all the extra's if it only takes 192 to upkeep "tradition"?

The new band hall is YEARS behind in getting done and the entire administration going back 30 years should be ashamed. The existing hall was TOO SMALL even for the smaller band back in the '70s.
Fact is, they are still a couple million short on the band hall fund. The bricks and mortar money is there, but not enough for all of the fixtures and finishing touches. Remember also that the band hall will also be used by the Wind Ensemble, orchestra and other units and they need to have more than one practice space so that the brass, percussion and woodwinds can have sectional rehearsals to optimize performance. So people that say it's too large, cut in down in size etc. are dead wrong because then it would not meet all of the educational and functional needs of the band department...AGAIN!

besides the first day of summer band and then maybe one other time, I don't think we EVER practiced inside the band hall in my 5 years.

Im not talking about downsizing the new band hall at all..Im just saying that maybe they should wait on raising funds for it and focus on keeping tiger band the full tiger band.

...because there was no space available to do so, not because it isn't needed. You can hear, teach and correct better in a room with no extraneous noise or distractions and the result is a tighter sounding band. Dr. Swor CRAMMED us into that little hall because he wanted our full attention and wanted us to really hear what he was teaching us to do. I may be biased, but Tiger Band back then kicked arse pound for pound for big round sound. The response from crowds (including away games) and the wide eyed stares of the other school's band members witness my opinion about that.
Being where you can focus, listen and refine is one of the cornerstones of improving a traditional band or orchestral group. I truly believe Tiger Band will sound better once it has a REAL home befitting its tradition and importance.

hey Tbone, were you there between 92-97? If so I'm sure we know each other, I was baritone section leader for a few years.

TxTiger, I only stated that because some might say cut the band hall down to find more money, which would be incredibly short-sighted. The hall would be obsolete on arrival. AGAIN.
I think the hall should be treated as a separate issue. Cutting the band size would save some money but not a significant amount in the greater scheme of things. However, I'm sure the administration gets a lot of heat from academics complaining about football school mentality and that if they take a hit then so should "fluff" like the marching band.
TAF put up the first money to start the band hall project, and helped push the AD to step up and commit a portion of revenues from three years of athletic tickets to then incent the legislature to honor their match offer for $5 million. One could possibly look to TAF for more help, and I'm certain people can look at all of the money being paid to coaches and the facilities expansions as evidence for more financial aid for an integral element to the LSU experience.
I still think there has to be a way to activate the rank and file to form some kind of booster group to drive new fundraising ideas as PART of the solution. I am aware of many ideas that have been floating around to raise more money for the band hall and some have been held up for various reasons. With more arms and legs to do things and spread the word, more stuff can be done.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm longer in the tooth than you. '71 - '74. I feared the tubas and bury-tones back in the day as I frequently had to cross ranks with you guys and both the instruments and the girth of the players were usually about one inch wider than what I needed to pass through.
Given how I look today, maybe I played the wrong instrument!!

I wouldnt be so quick to jump on the LSU admins as much as I would the people in the capital building down the street. The fact that the only two venues that the state can make budget cuts in is higher ed and healthcare is an embarassment, and until that changes, LSU will continue to suffer.

One less company front of Woodwinds (32 people) in Pre-Game is not going to make ANY difference. They'll just have to re-chart it for 32 less. Linda Moorhouse has been running TB for several years anyway, so Frank Wickes not being around will have no bearing either. I take it she's going to get the permamnent Director of Bands title now, instead of just Associate DOB......

Yeah, let the most grossly over paid coach in college football donate some of that 3.75 million to help out TB..........

Really?
I don't think there is much of a chance of this happening...

LSUS and LSU-Eunice should be closed and the funds switched to LSU. Its ridiculous to have these schools draining assets from the main campus.

Many schools are undergoing budget cuts (although not as extreme as LSU's). However schools like Washington, Arizona, California,....are shutting down the satellite campuses. You do not want to affect the core at a university.
I dont understand why LSU wants to cut facility services, grad student assistantships, and not fill vacant faculty positions.
LSU south campus has different options than the main campus so you dont want to close that. The Dental school and EA sports employ a lot of people and those are not offered on the main campus.
