Please show where I "brandished the 'free country' argument."

Thanks.

Total fuking guess though.

Thanks, but your guess is wrong. I'm not "from" New York. And personally, I don't care what the hell kind of flag you fly. However, I reserve my right to voice my opinion on the type of person that I believe you are, and I really don't give a damn what you think about it.

I only read the first few pages, but here are my thoughts.

If you set your stuff up early you should have someone there. We would set up and have shifts stay until gametime. We did this to keep the BTs of the world away from our shite.

If you have a spot and it it taken, suck it up and move on. You have no right to that space.

If you have a spot and someone has taken it and no one is there move on. They got there first.

awesome.

Heres a hint, get your own spot and dont try to take other peoples.
If its your first time to tailgate in this paticualr place why does it matter if you get somewhere else>??.........espec if you know that someone else always sets up there?
Trust me there are people who are much more anal about this than I am or ever would be.

If I'm there first how do I know it's someone's spot. Should I wait around and not set up Friday night cause someone might have a claim to that spot. Don't think so. I'm there first so it it mine.

I'd like to move my tailgate next to the Indian Mounds. But, I wouldn't think of just showing up early and "taking" it. I think it would be pretty rude and audacious to attempt it.

The original question was about etiquette. The proper thing to do is tailgate in areas where you don't get the same groups in the exact same spot every week (there are lots of spots on campus like this)...or scope out a spot that is not being used and make it yours.

Regardless of what your opinion is on the "first come first serve" issue, if you choose to ignore others and just show up early at a prime spot where the same people have been tailgating for years, then you may get some conflict. Most people don't want that and the premise of the question is that he doesn't want that.

Furthermore, even if that group chooses not to say anything, I would assume that they'd do everything they can the following week to make sure they get the spot back (since they've been there for years). So, if you are looking for a permantent spot, that probably isn't the most effective way of getting it.

How are you supposed to tell if a group tailgates in the same spot every week? If I'm driving around Saturday morning, there's no way to tell if an open spot is for someone that has been there every week.

Also, scope out a spot? Ok, I see an empty spot at 6 AM Saturday morning. Our group is set up, cooking. At 8 AM, another group shows up, says this is "their spot".

There's no way to tell if a spot is for someone else or not.

But, I will say that since the group did come over and tell us this was the spot they normally set up at, I'd tell them we wouldn't move this week since everything was already set up, but next week, we'll look for another spot. No use to continue to have a conflict.

Ok, I guess I should make it clearer. The time is not the issue, never was.

But since you brought it up, lets change the time to 4:30 on Friday.

How is anyone supposed to know that a particular spot is for someone else?

my group pre-sets up on friday afternoon. i arive
around 5am on Saturdays. Man the stuff you see at that time of the mornings is priceless. most of the HTIC's[head tailgater in charge] have to get there that early because it takes some time to set-up. It takes me over an hour[by myself]and i don't have a membership thing just friends who help out with the cost. I'm over the going to the game thing[too much alcohol, too old, etc]. It's all about the tailgate for me. I Live and die for this...[can't sleep].the game is almost trivial.
i got it bad.... but i know i'm not alone.

I only read the first three pages of this rant and my opinion is that "BT" and "LuckySo-n-So" give LSU tailgaters a bad rep. "ProudLSUMom" has it right.

I'd say you shouldn't go out there at 4:30 on Friday in your case for the first week.

Give the people who have a particular spot the opportunity to "reserve" it as always. On your first weekend, go out there Saturday morning early, find a spot you like, and then go "reserve" it on Friday's for the remaining games. It's what we did. And because of it, we didn't have any problems taking another's spot, and haven't had problems since.

Money,

Agree with you for the most part there. However, just like I said before, if we would get there early on Saturday, see that no one was in a particular area, and set up, some group could come up a hour later and tell us "you're in our spot".

It's not just areas close to the stadium that people want to "reserve".

That's the bottom line. ANd I don't think anyone is scoping out spots weeks before to steal a prime spot from a regular. They go out, see an empty space, take it. That is what we do when we go. Never an ounce of trouble. And we have gotten some prime spots.

People actually do that? Pretty narcissistic.

I woudl simply tell them that no one was here when we set up, then keep tailgaiting. I would also be nice and tel them that if I get out here next week and this same area is open, we will set up a bit to the side and do our best to hold some space for him, until it starts to get cramped.

This has gotten out of hand. The bottom line is, it's FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.

I live in Houston, so there's no way I'm going to know whose spot is whose. If & when I go out to campus to set up for tailgating, I'm going to find an open spot. Maybe I set up a tent or maybe I put out chairs. If I return the next morning and find my stuff moved, I'm going to voice my opinion and you may get your arse kicked because I'm that type of guy. If you have 50 people at your tailgate, then maybe I show up the following week on Friday when the numbers are more in my favor. The fact is, you have no right to touch other people's stuff and if you do, then I assume that you take responsibility for the consequences.

In BT's case, his arrogance hasn't caught up with him yet, but rest assured there are people out there that don't care if he has 5, 50 or 500 people at the tailgate. And if he is cordial about it as he says he is and makes it a point to get there earlier next week to set up first, then he just proved my point about first come, first serve. It's time to stop acting like Billy Bob Badass over the computer. The fact is, you've shown everyone how much of a loser you are by throwing the fact that you have 50 people to back you up.
